#ElNino 'wrecking ball' could cause record #Pacific temperature rise, UN says
The new WMO seasonal outlook predicted El Nino event would become extremely strong, with temperatures in the central Pacific rising about 3.8 Celsius above normal between November and January, peaking around December.
"We have not seen in our records 3.8. We have seen around 3 in some record El Ninos before, with very substantive impacts across the world. So we are beyond that limit," #WMO said.

#UN says we’re going to blow past 1.5º warming, offers a “now what?” answer
For first time, #UNEP acknowledged reality and conceded keeping warming below 1.5° was no longer viable. New goal focus on keeping both how long we exceed that limit and how much we exceed it by, at a minimum. Requires both dramatic #emissions cuts and removal of hundreds of gigatonnes of #carbondioxide from the atmosphere.
Best case is now an overshoot to 1.8º C & massive carbon removal.

#IBM CEO says #openweight models are now irresistibly good and cheap on-prem
90% of the performance at 10% of the price, in just two or three racks, is hard to beat
The CEO said open weight #AI models currently deliver “anywhere from 25 percent to 10 percent of the token cost of the frontier models. That is very attractive given that they’re now 90 percent as effective.”
Krishna thinks businesses will most often choose not to incur the higher costs.

#ElNiño shifts exotic #sea creatures to Southern #California's coast. Here’s what anglers are seeing
A super El Niño and unusually warm #Pacific waters are bringing tropical species — including bullet tuna, mahi-mahi and wahoo — to Southern California’s coast.
Sportfishing boats are catching thousands of yellowfin tuna after two lean years, but the fishery is far quieter than during the 2014-15 marine #heatwave.

#IPCC is under pressure to delay publication of key global #climate report
The report, known as #AR7, was scheduled to appear in 2028 in time for deliberations at the UN climate summit, Cop33, late that year. Cop33 is scheduled to critique governments’ actions to cut #greenhousegas #emissions in line with the Paris agreement target of limiting temperatures to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.
Some petro-states and major developing countries want to postpone it

#Signal bug could keep your mic - and camera - on after hangup
The #vulnerability, CVE-2026-113380, was published by MITRE on Tuesday and given a CVSS score of 9.3, marking it as a critical issue in Signal’s open-source #RingRTC library in every single version before 2.72.0. That update was pushed out last month, but the vulnerability wasn’t made public until now.
Careful what you say after goodbye, or better yet, update your messaging app.

Tens of thousands of #Nvidia #GPU sit idle in #Meta's #Prometheus supercluster, just waiting for a failure
In an eight-GPU node, the chance of having a GPU fail is relatively low. In a 100,000-GPU cluster, failures are unavoidable. Meta is building something that's 10x larger and requires distributed training runs across multiple datacenters.
The massive pool of redundant GPU is just one of several measures the hyperscaler has taken to keep its #AI training runs on track.

#US #Army Wants to Sic #AIAgents on Its Enemies. What Could Go Wrong?
Documents obtained by The Intercept show the #military is trying to deploy autonomous #AI agents to hack its adversaries.
So far, this has largely been the work of human soldiers operating computers, like those of the 780th Military Intelligence Brigade. But as the government races to adopt #artificialintelligence technology, #ARCYBER is looking to offload some of its attacks to AI.

They Teach at a #BusinessSchool. It’s Time to Shut Them Down
What exactly is an #MBA for? "Business school doesn't just hand out skills and a network" argues Marquis "it quietly reshapes how people see the world, rewarding dealmaking, simplification and optimization for financial metrics, while workers and communities become afterthoughts." Business schools are not malfunctioning; highly efficient machines doing exactly what they were designed for.

Global #icecliff survey tests disputed theory behind projections of #sealevelrise
Marine #ice-cliff instability is theory that tall ice cliffs, taller than about 100m (328ft), can become unstable and trigger rapid, self-sustaining ice loss. Because process has never been directly observed, scientists debated if it should be included in projections of sea level rise.
#WHOI's "findings suggest ice-sheet models may underestimate how quickly tall ice cliffs can break apart."

People are using #AI to make their #smartTV dumb again
One solution, called “dumbtv,” describes its mission on GitHub thus: “Your TV should do what you paid for: your apps, your HDMI inputs, and nothing else. No #ads from the #TV itself, no watch tracking, no update you did not ask for.”
Another, “cleanyourtv,” promises to strip the bloatware from any #AndroidTV or #GoogleTV, replace launcher with one that resembles Apple TV.
