  1. I was ready to shout “The Ghost & Mrs Muir!” or “The Iron Curtain!”, but the question setters let me down.

  2. I'd like to slap whoever at DELL thought it was a great idea to ship computers with ONLY DisplayPort and no (obvious) way to have HDMI without some hassle

This goes especially for their "1L" computers. I have an Optiplex 3060 that's like that. 2 DisplayPorts; 0 HDMI ports. I have to use a unidirectional cable to go to an HDMI display, and luckily for me, the KVMs I hook that to are good enough. (that machine is otherwise good enough to run today's stuff)

  3. I took some time to work on a small creative coding task I gave my students today. It's been a while since I've done any creative work with code.

Not quite finished yet, but I'm happy with my little animation effect.

  4. I prefer water at room temperature. Not for alleged health reasons — it’s just how I like it. It is my second favorite way to drink water.

My favorite way to drink water is hot and passed through ground coffee beans.

  5. I won at yarn chicken, but only because I cheated (AKA started decreasing like my yarn depended on it). The uglier end is the one I started with, I hadn't quite mastered the sacred skill of counting to 8 yet, and also somehow added a stitch without meaning to. 🤠

  6. I’m now using DxO PhotoLab for the majority of my editing, but have had to rethink how I use the highlights and shadows sliders. In my latest Weekly Edit video I take this image from Wheal Peevor and show how these sliders differ from Adobe Lightroom Classic. Watch the full edit here: youtu.be/G2BLpK7G1is?si=KdEhtg

  8. I and Frederik Fabricius-Bjerre just published a preprint on fitting intercepts in regularized regression! We show that poor choice of optimization strategy for the intercept can cause the entire solver to collapse. The intercept has been ignored in the literature and we think think it's time this little coordinate gets its time in the sun too!

  9. I've always been dubious of the idea that an AI bubble popping would a lot of stranded hardware. the neoclouds COULD use their older GPUs for lots of things that aren't frontier models, but I don't think they're nimble enough. Meanwhile, hyperscalers like Microsoft are busy doing just that to speed up database queries.

GPU acceleration isn't new; nor are GPU-accelerated databases but they've never been mainstream @andrewbrust notes. you need a second SQL engine or switch to an engine most people haven't heard of. Microsoft putting it right into the Fabric platform as a switch speeds up existing SQL queries with no editing required.

The really clever bit: you don't need the latest, most expensive GPUs to speed up your database so it can keep up with all the extra queries agents are throwing at it. you get faster queries and Microsoft gets more life out of older GPUs, Tino Tereshko tells me.

Not only are older GPUs not getting scrapped faster (a suggestion that was doing the rounds last year); so many teams at Microsoft who aren't working on frontier models have ideas to use them that there's internal competition, which may gate availability of database acceleration, according to Conor Cunningham (who covered the research behind this at Fabcon). There's definitely demand!

  12. I've been trying to build my own little BBS over LoRa, running on my old Google Pixel 7 Pro.

However, I haven't been able to test it yet since I only have a single node and can't exactly "call myself" XD

  14. I wrote up my response into a blog post last night:

Then this morning I removed myself as a moderator.
Life is too short to be stressing about subreddit moderation drama.

  15. I guess that is my overall account which also has my photography channel too, but subscribing to my account would show everything. I'm never quite sure the difference between a channel subscription and an account subscription over there haha

  16. I was right in the middle of writing an email at work when my screen went black with "Restarting" in white text in the middle of the display. Last night I got a notification that said updates had been installed with two options. One, restart now. Two, restart in 5 minutes. I told it to restart now. It didn't. A few minutes later I was ready to sign off, and the pop-up reappeared. I told it to restart in 5 minutes. This morning it hadn't restarted. Now? Restarts with no warning. Windows is shit..

  18. I'm saddened to learn of the death of #WalterKoenig at age 90. While best known for playing #Chekov on Star Trek #TOS, I'll always remember him best as the sinister-but-complicated PsiCop Bester on #Babylon5 .

#RIP, sir, and thanks for many, many hours of entertainment.

  20. I will say, though, I’m three days into my week off (including the weekend) and if this is what retirement is like, I’m almost glad I’ll never be able to afford it.

  21. I don't know if my brain is cut out for teaching three different classes in the same year anymore.
