  1. 40 mile hike in last three days.
    No phone, very basic essentials.
Rained...in the desert. Light weight tent, zero Kelty bag and a big dog.
    Suffered but needed the space.
    Hungry though.
'22 was OK, working towards a better '23.
Feeling clean and light (lightheaded, lol)

  5. It's good to have choices unless you can't make a choice.
    I feel stuck.

Christmas alone is not a problem, it was never a holiday we celebrated anyway.
I'm playing guitar and mandolin on New Year's Eve so I have to be here until then.

But sometime in the next few weeks I absolutely need a change.

At least it's 73° outside LOL

Off to the dog park here in Quartzsite, Arizona.

  6. Box Canyon Unconformity

This is an angular unconformity at Box Canyon near Ouray, Colorado. The bottom layer, the Uncompahgre quartzites, were deposited horizontally, then uplifted and tilted vertically during mountain building and eroded to a nearly flat surface. The rocks above are the Elbert sandstones deposited during a marine “transgression,” a sinking of the land and resulting ocean encroachment. The gap between the two events is about 1.3 billion years, a vast and very Deep Time. And, yes, this is the same type of Great Unconformity seen at the Grand Canyon, and it occurs in different rock sections around the world.

  8. One of the most iconic works of the 2009 Pritzker Prize winner Peter Zumthor, Therme Vals is built from locally quarried Quartzite over the only thermal springs in Graubünden. It was built between 1993 and 1996 and inaugurated on December 14 1996. The building is so special that only two years after its inauguration, it was already granted protected heritage status. #architecturephotography #architecture #peterzumthor #switzerland

  12. Hiking in the Magaliesberg - water and rock features. This very old mountain range runs east-west cutting through Pretoria and extends further west than east. It is on the western side where it is most interesting with many kloofs (ravines) in the mountain. This mostly quartzite mountain range is very interesting in the sense that it is actually a mountain lying on its side after a massive magna upheaval billions of years ago.

The day hike was inside and next to a ravine called Grootkloof. The name itself means "big ravine". The sides of the main ravine have tall rock faces offering many rock climbing routes all using natural protection.

PS: The land is owned by the Mountain Club of South Africa and access is only by permit for visitors. See the Magaliesberg section of the MCSA's website for information.

  13. [3/3] Monfragüe National Park cont. Also at Salto del Gitano we spied—thanks to the line of bird scopes & lenses pointed at it—Monticola solitarius | the blue rock thrush, who appeared to be commenting on the attention being received (📷1). The geology at Salto del Gitano is noteworthy too; the near-vertical quartzite strata of Peña Falcón on the opposite bank shelters one of the most important griffon vulture colonies in Europe (📷2). We continued the trail to the hilltop Hermitage & Castle of Monfragüe, just closing as we arrived—but the free views of the landscape were worth the climb (📷3). As we got back to the van we were overflown by Milvus migrans | the black kite (📷4), a consolation prize for not having seen Aquila adalberti | the Spanish imperial eagle.

Villareal de San Carlos to La Tajadilla, out-and-back was 9km & took a little over 3h. Our Fuente del Francés via Salto del Gitano & the castle return loop was 8km/ 3h.

  18. Today is moving day! After doing my chores and securing everything on board my camper, I'll bounce my way out of here and head up to Buckeye. I figured I'd do a load of laundry and some grocery shopping and maybe top off a propane tank. I'll definitely get fuel for the truck.

I've got three nights reserved at a full hook up campground in Quartzsite starting today, so I'll do an RV refresh there and treat myself to a nice hot shower this evening.

    Tomorrow, rock shows! #RVing #RoadTrip

  19. Karst (Karst 🌍)

Karst is a topography formed from the dissolution of soluble carbonate rocks such as limestone and dolomite. It is characterized by features like poljes above and drainage systems with sinkholes and caves underground. There is some evidence that karst may occur in more weathering-resistant rocks such as quartzite given the right conditions. Subterranean drainage...

Karst topography is a geological formation shaped by the dissolution of a layer or layers of soluble bedrock, usually carbonate rock such as limestone or dolomite, but also in gypsum. It has also been documented for weathering-resistant rocks, such as quartzite, given the right conditions. This is an incompl...
