  1. A very cool wolf spider, just quietly moving around on moss. Allowed enough time for a decent picture (with an android phone)
Set on a typical gneiss'ish rock infused with hard white quartz crystals.

  2. #Arachtober 11: a little thin-legged wolf spider (_Pardosa_) on a blade of grass in a marshy meadow. They can be practically as jumpy as jumping spiders and are very hard to get close enough to to photograph.

  3. #Spider warning for today's #Weretober - a werewolf! ...spider!

I'm pretty sure she looks more curious than hungry at the moment, but it's kinda hard to tell, so watch yourself.

  8. The burnt #wolfspider, #Xerolycosa #nemoralis (#Lycosidae, #Araneae), is a #species of #spider native to Eurasia that prefers dry #habitats, hunts prey actively and rests in a self-dug burrow. The authors A. Bednarek et al. (2016) studied the spider's response to thermal #stress in form of an increased #Hsp70 (protein/ enzyme complex) synthesis in by humans polluted environments. #Biodiversity

  9. #Arachtober 29: yesterday in High Park, I was lurking in the shrubs and low vegetation on Hawk Hill hoping to see juncos and chickadees, looking for a spot to kneel that didn't have rabbit poop, when I came across something I've wanted to see for years—a wolf spider in a burrow! Many wolf spiders burrow, e.g. _Geolycosa_ (which I think this one might be), but I'd never actually found such a burrow myself.

The spider was small, no larger than the typical _Pardosa_ I see, and while timid it stayed at the entrance to the burrow. It was hard to get good light in there and this was the best photo I could get. I will undoubtedly go back to look for more!

  10. #Arachtober 12: In some interestingly fungus-covered grass in the swampy meadow by the creek just past the Oculus, I saw lots of _Pardosa_ thin-legged wolf spiders, but they were as jumpy as, well, jumping spiders and it was hard to photograph any. Here's a couple I did get!

These cute little spiders, getting up to ~1cm body length, put the lie to the common misconception that a "wolf spider" is necessarily big, hairy, and bulky. In fact the family Lycosidae has thousands of species all over the world, as varied as their habitats, from large desert burrow-dwellers to these lithe little denizens of marshy undergrowth and rocky shore.

  11. Suddenly realized what the secondhand DSLR would be perfect for at my current beginner stage: the lakeshore thin-legged wolf spiders (_Pardosa lapidicina_)!

Though it is rather late in the season, I saw plenty of females with egg sacs running around—perhaps it's been warm long enough for them to have two litters? And I found one mother carrying babies. I also include photos of two colour variants, blue-grey and yellow-brown.

The mature males I've seen are all very dark, almost black. The largest females seem to be solid colours. I wonder if they change colour based on life stage?

  12. This thin-legged wolf spider (_Pardosa_) I spotted today was so confident in its camouflage it didn't even bother running.

  13. Went down to the lake this afternoon to hang out with the _Pardosa_ wolf spiders. Young spiders, females with egg sacs, females with babies, mature males courting—everyone's out and enjoying the sun!

  14. A ballooning wolf spider from down by the lake the other day! I like how in the third picture you can see its little claws hanging on to the silk strung between a gap in the railing.

  15. Went on a walk to Trillium Park today and, to my surprise, the _Pardosa_ were out in force, as if it were spring. They were sunning themselves on the rocks by the lake, many with their front legs tucked up in a rather cute "catloaf" kind of pose.

As much as I like spending time with the wolf spiders, I would much rather everything still be cold and barren and the spiders dormant under the rocks.

  16. I don't know what possessed me to go to Trillium Park today of all days. Oh well. There are still plenty of _Pardosa_ wolf spiders to be found, but the place belongs to the grass spiders (_Agelenopsis_) now.

Many people mix up wolf and grass spiders; click through for comparison pictures and helpful alt text.

  17. A bit of #OpenAccess #Arachnews:

How do forested buffers around rivers affect the diet of predators like trout and spiders? In the abundant fall season, both get most of their food from terrestrial sources! I'm not sure exactly what this means because ecology is really hard so read the paper yourself: sciencedirect.com/science/arti :OpenAccess:

Two new species of eyeless, cave-dwelling pholcids described. One is from Australia's ancient Pilbara, a remnant from before Australia aridified. Another is from lava tubes on Réunion Island. Plus some philosophical questions about what a cave is, really. subtbiol.pensoft.net/article/1 :OpenAccess:

  18. However, I was *really* there to catch some rays with the wolf spiders. This _Pardosa lapidicina_ had such a comfortable sploot going on that she didn't even mind me taking up-close photos. There's no sploot like the P. lap sploot.
