  1. Well, my state has given a #heatwave warning (rule is 5 or more consecutive days of 35°C or above, with little relief during the night).

This is my second major heatwave in this country.

    It could be worse, though.

In 1540, a lot of #Europe had 11 months (!) without any #rain. 1/2 million people died from #dysentery. #Wine became very sweet (roasted) & cheap.

The worst case for me will be a very early start if I want to exercise.

  2. Katalin Karikó & Drew Weissman just won the #nobleprize in Medicine for the discovery of two mRNA vaccines against #covid!

It's neat that something we all of an actual concept of, and that affected all of us so fundamentally, was just honoured :)

Also, Karikó is the first woman to get a Noble Prize in Medicine since 2015!

  3. #Australian #primeminister Anthony Albanese just gave a national address to ensure #Aussies that the #middleeast #crisis is kinda bad but hey, "the Australian way" will fix it.

They cut the #fuel excise in half (we paid ~AUD$80 for some 27L of #diesel the other day) & eliminated the heavy vehicle tax for truckies for 3 mths.

He also ominously said that Aussies should "take the train or bus more often" - which after 10+ yrs in this country, is setting off alarm bells for me.

  7. It's just after midnight in #China & thus after the 2 days (& about 9 hours) of the #Gaokao, the hardest Uni entrance #exam in the world.

They stop construction work & reroute traffic for this every year.

#Students get a celebratory flag-waving parade to the school.

This year (2024) 13.42 million students have (or will still have to) taken this exam.

That's about the same amount of humans as live in #Burundi.

  8. Did you know that #homesickness was once known as '#Swiss Disease'?

The word was first mentioned in 1651 & described as an #illness in 1688.

In 1710, it was claimed that music of Swiss #Alpine herdsmen & the Guggisberglied (a #folk song), led Swiss soldiers to desert. The singing of the same resulted (allegedly) in capital #punishment.

One doctor thought that the low air pressure made the Swiss sick with longing & would lead, if not returned home, to their eventual #death.

  9. Did you know that in a small village in #India, people have been #worshipping #stone balls?

Large, round balls are thought to #protect land & cattle in Padlya village near Khandwa district in Madhya Pradesh. The balls are named "Kakar Bhairav", the first meaning 'farm' & the second 'ruler'. There are about 256 of them.

Recently, #scientists discovered that the #sacred balls are really fossilised eggs belonging to a #dinosaur species of Titanosaurus.

  10. CW: Off-topic - NBA stuff (ball is life 🏀)

Watching the Celebrity Game (really because Gianmarco Tamberi, big fan!) & I'm already angry at this dumb light show.

  11. Did you know that the most #dangerous #racing event in the world only had 2 #death-free years?

The Isle of Man TT Mountain Course is a 60 km #motorcycle race held since 1907.

The race adds #safety features after every year since 1914, & yet the worst year was in 2005 when 11 people, including a marshall & a spectator, died.

    The only fatality-free years were 1982 & 2024.

  12. It's 8 pm & I'll be going to bed to get up again at 3:30 am to watch the #olympics #closingceremony.

I'll miss having something exciting to watch every minute of every day 😢

PS: Did you know this was the first Olympics in which #men were technically allowed in the #artisticswimming ?

    None qualified though.

  13. Did you know about the creative initiative to help make #blood #donations by #gay men fully legal in the US?

The FDA banned men who have sex with men from donating blood in 1983 & a form of this ban remains today.

A US media agency & British #artist Stuart Semple, have taken "unwanted" blood of their gay employees & turned them into inks & paints.

    Bloody good.

Or when Finland's fairy's bowstrings broke.

  18. Did you know that Northern #Indigenous #Australian #Mythology has its own #fairy legend?

#Aboriginal people from Arnhem Land believe in a creature called a Mimi.

They are said to have preceded #humans & created the first #rock #paintings.

Mimis taught the skill to the first people, along with how to #hunt kangaroo.

These spirits are VERY thin & have fragile bones, & so to avoid breaking in half when it’s windy, they hide in rock crevices.

  21. Did you know that #Korea has a #magical #dog breed?

The Sapsalgae are a fluffy, good-natured breed that is said to ward off evil spirits and bad luck. They are also majestically thick-coated, which almost led to their extinction during the #Japanese occupation of Korea.

The Japanese colonists used the dog's pelts as winter coats. By the 1980s they were down to 8 animals.

A geneticist saved their DNA & the numbers now are up to a few thousand.

  25. Did you know that #hardtack, the long lasting flour & water #cracker used by seafarers & soldiers, was made round at #sea & square on land?

During sea voyages, hardtack was stored in barrels (hence: round), while during land campaigns it was stored in wooden boxes, & therefore made square.

#British Royal Navy sailors were issued 50g more hardtack than #US #Navy sailors.

During Queen Victoria's reign, now made with machines, hardtack became a cost efficient hexagonal shape.
