  1. #PortlandME - Lecture - #LivingAtlas for Bioregional Regeneration

    #PortlandPublicLibrary, Rines Auditorium
    Wednesday, March 25, 2026
    5:30pm–7:00pm
    Free. Adults 19+.

"Glenn Page will be presenting on a new idea called the 'Living Atlas for Bioregional Regeneration.' The Living Atlas is a framework and a tool to help better understand the natural world. To do so, it behaves like a living being. It grows and adapts with every physical and digital interaction. It takes in all sorts of information from different places and people to create connections between the two. With these connections, the Living Atlas can highlight the causes and solutions of environmental health. The goal is then to be able to show which problems and responses are unique, which can be replicated, and what information is useful to the user.

"The Living Atlas is an emergent, ever-evolving and customizable experience in both digital and physical form. It is a powerful tool for exploring bioregional complexity and for identifying opportunities for deeper engagement. It weaves together ecological, social, financial, cultural, and spiritual dimensions, helping practitioners learn, share, and connect their regeneration efforts for greater collective impact. It is a living system that grows and adapts with those who engage with it."

    Rines Auditorium, #PortlandPublicLibrary
    Wednesday, May 27, 2026
    5:30pm–7:00pm
    Free. Adults 19+.

"This presentation will describe the fundamentals of making habitat at home with #NativePlants. "#TylerRefsland, Manager of Applied Ecology at the Wild Seed Project (#WSP), has an extensive background in plant ecology, forest restoration, and climate change. He holds a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolution from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he studied how land management practices affect the drought resilience and carbon storing capacity of oak-hickory woodlands. Prior to his role at WSP, Tyler was a postdoctoral researcher at Michigan State University, working in collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service and Wisconsin DNR to develop seed collection and planting strategies to promote climate resilient forests in the Great Lakes region. He lives in Portland with his partner, their two children, and dog Harriet

"Portland’s Sustainability Series is co-hosted by the Portland Public Library and #MomentumConservation, and is sponsored by Bangor Savings Bank. 20. So, what this does NOT address is the issue of staffing, or lack thereof! Maybe let a few unhoused folks live there, and then you'll have some staff! PLUS, the other issue is how far away from the downtown #PortlandME area (5 miles) it is! The same with #MaineNeeds (4 miles), where folks can get tents and clothing. Everything used to be centralized at #PrebleStreet, downtown, but noooo. Can't have homeless folks setting up tents near Whole F*cking Foods, can we?!!

Portland adds criteria to open emergency warming shelter after it failed to open during blizzard

The shelter will now open during blizzard and ice storm warnings, and there are procedures if a forecast changes quickly

by Adam Bartow, Mar 5, 2026

Excerpt: "The decision to activate the warming shelter with less than 48 hours' notice will be determined by the availability of staff needed to safely operate the facility."

  24. #PortlandME - #Riverside #Recycling Facility

    #HazardousWaste

"Hazardous Waste collection is the FIRST Saturday of each month April thru November between 7:30 AM and 1:00 PM. If near a holiday, please check the holiday schedule to see if we are open. If we are closed on the weekend that would be hazardous waste day it will normally be skipped entirely for that month.

You may want to visit www.PaintCare.org for paint disposal options in your area.

Riverside Recycling accepts household hazardous waste (HHW) on the 1st Saturday of the month (April through November.) Collection occurs from 7:30AM to 1PM. This program is open to all Maine residents disposing of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) from their residence. Portland E-Card holders may dispose of up to 10 gallons of HHW annually with a maximum of TWO visits at no charge (i.e. two visits of 5 gallons each visit, or one visit with 10 gallons will use up the HHW portion of your E-Card for the year). Acceptable paint, stain and varnish can be disposed of at no charge as part of the PaintCare.org program and does not go against the HHW portion of your Ecard. Residential customers without an Ecard will be charged $6.50 per gallon for liquid wastes or $3.50 per pound for solid wastes. Unfortunately, we cannot accept hazardous waste from businesses or municipalities..

How will the drop off program work?

Prepare your household hazardous waste for drop off. When preparing hazardous items for disposal at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility, be sure that liquids are in sturdy leak-proof containers with caps or lids. Use the original container whenever possible. Secure breakable or loose items inside boxes or bags. Do not mix items together. Be careful that no items spill or break when they are in your vehicle.

Bring your items to Riverside Recycling, 910 Riverside St. on the 1st Saturday of the month (April through November.) Collection occurs from 7:30AM to 1PM. When you arrive at the facility, stop at the attendant’s booth and speak with the attendant. ALL HAZARDOUS WASTE MUST BE DROPPED OFF BEFORE RECYCLING ANY OTHER ITEMS.

Follow any directions you receive at the attendant’s booth and proceed into the facility. When you pull up at the HHW facility, stay in your vehicle. The HHW staff will handle removing your items for you.
