Virtual Event - #NewEngland - Which #NativePlants Help #Wildlife? The Science Behind Informed Plant Selection
Thu Mar 12, 2026 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM EDT
"You’re ready to plant more native species in your garden to support wildlife. As you start to plan, you might have a few questions. Which plant species make the biggest difference? Does it matter if a plant is a cultivar? How important is local ecotype? Which plant traits attract which #pollinator?
In this talk, Desirée L. Narango, Ph.D., from the #Vermont Center for #Ecostudies, will share research that evaluates how different native plant species and characteristics influence interactions with pollinators and songbirds. Drawing from her research and that of other experts in the field, she will explore what we know (and still don’t know) about common questions in #EcologicalGardening. The talk will also highlight ways you can contribute data through community science and help improve the information available for wildlife-friendly planting decisions.
This event is co-hosted by #WildSeedProject and #MOFGA. The webinar will be recorded, and a recording will be shared with registrants within a few days of the event taking place.
Registration info: This event’s sliding scale registration is designed to keep the class as accessible as possible while also covering MOFGA’s and Wild Seed Project's costs. Recommended price for non-members is $15; recommended price for members is $10.
Scholarship funds are available to community members in order to increase program accessibility, and participants in MOFGA’s Journeyperson program are welcome to register at no-cost. You’re welcome to use the fund by checking “Scholarship/JP” at checkout. For any questions about scholarship funds, please email [email protected]."

Garden For Wildlife via @wellingboroughecogroup
Gardening for wildlife is probably the easiest way to garden, and is possibly the best thing that you can do for animals. It’s also something that we can all do in our gardens, and if you have one, in our allotments too.
Excerpt: "Making our gardens wildlife friendly doesn’t necessarily mean that we have to leave them to grow into wild jungles. Every space, whether it’s a huge estate or a busy family garden, can give a home to nature.
"There are lots of simple things we can do to help the animals we share a space with, from making sure that they have access to different habitats, to nurturing well stocked feeding grounds for them. With a little imagination, it’s easy to create a recipe in your garden that works for wildlife.
"Imagine that your garden is a hotel and that it has to offer:
- A friendly welcome for all creatures.
- A pool
- A Nectar Bar open all year round
- A Restaurant where all diets are catered for
- Is open to non residents
- Accommodates short breaks and long stay
- There’s no booking required."To create your garden hotel, the traditional recipe for gardening for wildlife needs a few more ingredients. The essentials to bear in mind are the same essentials that we all need; somewhere to live and something to eat and drink; but the secret to success is to consider what needs wildlife has and how to fulfill them."

Moving some #WildStrawberries to a shadier spot (next to a small patch of raspberries). I'll be moving mint and sweet woodruff to the spot as well. Reclaiming the spot from an old woodpile and some invasive vines!
The Strawberry Variety That Can Grow In Your Shady Backyard
By Kate Nicholson, May 6, 2024
"The moniker "wild strawberry," sometimes also "alpine strawberry" or "wood strawberry," encompasses a bunch of varieties. Fragraria virginiana and Fragraria vesca are the most commonly available and are native to the continental United States, as is the less frequently grown beach strawberry (Fragaria chiloensis). Popular Fragraria vesca cultivars include Alexandra (also "Alexandria"), Semperflorens, Alpine, Baron Solemacher, and Ruegen, and there's also a French-developed wild strawberry called Fragaria Mara des Bois. No matter the cultivar, you can expect to see small, soft, bright pink, deep red, or cream-hued berries between May and July. Sometimes, if you're lucky and conditions are right, they fruit again in the fall! In the wild, these plants grow almost anywhere, from dry sites to damp, full sun to shade, usually at the border of forests or in clearings and meadows."

#GuerillaGardening : What Is It, and Should You Try It?
Jan 11, 2025 10:09 AM EST
"Who doesn’t need a bit more greenery in their lives? No one, if guerilla gardeners have anything to say about it. Whether activists, do-gooders, or just plain old lovers of beauty, guerilla gardeners have been sprucing up neglected corners of the world for quite some time. #JohnnyAppleseed, introducer of apple trees to many states in the US, was one of the OG guerilla gardeners (and yes, he was a real person).
"Despite what its name might imply—guerilla means 'little war' in Spanish—guerilla gardening has nothing to do with war or destruction, and everything to do with creation. So what exactly is this ironically titled type of gardening, and is it something you should consider doing in your own community?
What Is Guerilla Gardening?
"Essentially, guerilla gardening is the act of gardening (planting flowers, trees, fruits, vegetables, etc.) in areas where you are technically not authorized to do so. According to Sonya Shikhman, a lawyer at Bytensky Shikhman Barristers, 'many see it as environmental activism, bringing greenery into urban environments where traditional gardening may not be possible.'
"This form of gardening is often used to revamp empty lots and other less-than-appealing spaces and create areas that look beautiful and/or produce food for the community. Other aims and benefits include 'improving air quality, increasing biodiversity, and giving local residents a sense of ownership and pride,' Shikhman says."

The Growing Popularity of #GuerillaGardening
Urban guerilla gardeners are taking direct action against the neglect of public spaces.
"What used to be something of a fringe activity with decidedly illicit undertones has quickly become a mainstream subject and activity. Guerilla gardening is being used to reclaim community spaces, rejuvenate urban areas, and encourage more connection with nature. It’s a phenomenon that gets more popular every year.
"Ever spotted some beautiful plants growing where you least expect them? There’s a good chance that what you've seen is the result of guerilla gardening. Whether it’s a political statement or an attempt to get closer to nature, guerilla gardeners are all around us. And they’re not going away.
[...]
"On the surface, guerilla gardening is very much against the law. It’s trespassing on someone else's property. Even if you’re making the property better, guerilla gardeners don’t have any legal right to do so.
"Seed bombing, where the guerilla gardeners pack seeds into a lump of moist soil or compost and throw those ‘seed grenades’ into otherwise inaccessible spaces, is also illegal. Even if you don’t step foot on the property, those seed bombs still class as trespass.
"However, guerilla gardening is a criminal activity that's often overlooked by the law. In this research study, based on a group of UK guerilla gardeners, the phrase ‘normalized law breaking’ is commonly used. The study argues that guerilla gardening is largely accepted, and perhaps even welcomed, even by local law enforcement. In LA, a guerilla gardener even managed to have the law changed, so that residents could garden on city property without a permit.
"And something is satisfying about that. When guerilla gardening can transform urban spaces, and beautify those urban sites that are otherwise grotesque and devoid of local wildlife, it’s hard to be critical of those that carry out their seed bombing and abandoned site transformations."

Permaculture Guilds: Creating Harmonious Plant Communities
Learn about permaculture guilds—groups of plants and elements working together to enhance growth and resilience. Design your own for a sustainable garden.
"Permaculture, a design philosophy aimed at creating sustainable and self-sufficient ecosystems, emphasizes the importance of working with nature.
"Central to permaculture is the concept of guilds—groups of plants that grow and support each other, enhancing growth and resilience.
"This post explores what permaculture guilds are, their key components, examples of effective guilds, and how to design and implement your own.
Key Components of a Permaculture Guild
- Primary Plant: The main crops or plants that form the central focus of the guild. These are often chosen for their economic or nutritional value. They act as the central element around which the rest of the guild is structured.
- Nitrogen Fixer: Plants like legumes that add nitrogen to the soil, enhancing fertility. Examples include clover, beans, and peas. These plants are crucial for maintaining soil health and providing essential nutrients to the primary plants.
- Dynamic Accumulator: Plants that draw up nutrients from deep in the soil, making them available to other plants. Comfrey and dandelion are popular choices. They help in recycling nutrients within the ecosystem and improving soil structure.
- Pollinator Attractor: Plants that attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, ensuring successful crop pollination. Lavender, borage, and sunflowers are excellent options. These plants not only support the primary crops but also enhance biodiversity.
- Pest Repellent: Plants that deter pests through their scent or by attracting predatory insects. Marigolds, garlic, and chives are effective pest repellents. Integrating these plants helps in natural pest management and reduces the need for chemical interventions.
- Mulch Plant: Species that provide organic matter to the soil, enhancing moisture retention and soil health. Comfrey and clover can serve as living mulch. These plants help in maintaining soil moisture, reducing erosion, and adding organic matter to the soil.
- Ground Cover: Plants like creeping thyme or sweet woodruff that spread across the ground, protecting soil from erosion, retaining moisture, and suppressing weeds. They are essential for maintaining soil health and preventing erosion.
- Wildlife Support: Plants that provide habitat and food for beneficial wildlife. Elderberry and hawthorn are examples that support birds and insects. These plants contribute to the overall ecosystem health by supporting local wildlife."

There's a companion website for #TheWoodsInYourBackyard ! Sweet! It also has PDF versions of the book (I like having physical copies of books).
The Woods in Your Backyard
"This web site was developed as a companion piece to 'The Woods in Your Backyard: A Guide to Your Woodland.' This resource guide was developed by the Maine Forest Service to help you understand the woods in your backyard and provide ideas about how to work with your property, whether you own a 1-acre lot or 20 acres on the edge of town.
"A directory of state agencies and natural resource-based organizations can be found beginning on page 3 in Chapter 1 and also in the Chapter 1 section below. These agencies are good initial contacts and a great source of additional information on a variety of topics.
"'Backyard Family Activities' are included at the end of each chapter to help you learn more about your property as a family. The activities are most suitable for older children and teens, and they all require adult supervision. Teachers and youth group leaders can adapt them for use with older students. When completed, the Backyard Family Activities also provide a planning framework for working in your woods.

So, my neighbor and I share a property line which contains a wooded area full of blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, sweet pea and other plants (as well as trees). We've been talking about taking walks together to see what's out there, figure out what's invasive, and growing more for the local wildlife (and maybe ourselves -- we've had some great blackberry harvests in the past). We both garden for pollinators in our yards, so it would be great to collaborate (and maybe include some of the other neighbors). I just bought a couple of books that might prove very useful with this endeavor!
