Five years ago, this spot was a "green desert" for local wildlife – burning bushes and butterfly bushes ruled. Now? It's a thriving native haven! Get ready for a pollinator party in a few weeks when the Monarda and milkweed explode with color. From foreign to flourishing – that's the power of native plants! 🦋🐝 #NativeGardening #WildlifeHabitat #Transformation @plants @nativeplants #nativeplants

Today's #NativeGardening discovery: Massachusetts has moles. And apparently they really like digging under the roots of the young #NativePlants in one particular bed :(

I have just spent three hours cutting, digging and pulling invasive species from our back yard (which as an immigrant, always feels slightly ironic), and I seriously need a drink.
And I get to do it all again tomorrow.
I also took action against noxious organisms in the front yard.

A year or so of #NativeGardening (leave the leaves, remove invasives, let the natives plants grow) and responsible birdfeeding, and I'm rewarded with our 67th yard bird species this morning as I get up to face the workweek, a little male Common Yellowthroat down the bottom of the yard, hopping around the naturally-present Goldenrod and the fence around the planted Bearberry & Groundsel. Elsewhere, the Burnweed is producing its downy seeds and is full of insects and Goldfinch

I can barely take in the burst of life that's happened in my garden in the past week. From an unsettling emptiness in June to a buzzing, euphoric hotbed of bees, wasps, flies, moths, and butterflies amid the flowers, native plants, and veggies. Joy!

As #gardening season blooms and you make your plant list, consider adding #NativePlants to your gardens & pots this year. Carolinian #Canada defines native plants as "plants that existed in our region prior to European settlement; they have evolved alongside our native insect, bird and other animal species." Each province will have its own list of native plants, though there's a lot of overlap across the country.

Where can I find a list of Indigenous names for native plants? There has to be a better alternative for "Canada Anemone" for example, right? #gardening #nativegardening #turtleisland #kanadario
