"How Germans took a stand against Nazis by dancing to ‘degenerate’ swing music
What started as escapism became a tool to rebuke fascism.
Jazz became a worldwide sensation throughout the 1920s, and Germany was no exception. However, as the political climate grew darker in the 1930s, jazz music also became a way for young people to rebel against a fascist regime.
Under Nazi ideology, jazz was labeled as 'degenerate music' ('entartete Musik') for its obvious roots in Black culture, not to mention that many musicians who played jazz were Jewish.
Restrictions gradually manifested: first, broadcasting of jazz was prohibited, then individual artists were banned, followed by listening to any non-German radio station, which did play propaganda-filled 'Aryanized' jazz.
(. . .)
However, over the years, there would be Gestapo raids, arrests, forced entry into the Hitler Youth, and, in some cases, being sent to concentration camps. Even for those detained, jazz remained a tool of resistance. Some reportedly sang and danced to Louis Armstrong’s 'Jeepers Creepers' while being held prisoner. Erich Pechmann, who was held in a French concentration camp, was said to have sung the blues song and even used his voice to imitate jazz instrument."

"Convicted German left-wing extremist Lina E. released early
According to the court, Lina E. 'credibly renounced her former willingness to commit violence'.
According to the court, Lina E. 'credibly renounced her former willingness to commit violence', had behaved well in prison and, on the basis of an expert assessment, had a 'favourable prognosis' for a law-abiding life outside.
(. . .)
Lina E., now 31, was the central figure in a left-wing militant network that systematically hunted down alleged right-wing extremists and suspected neo-Nazis in the eastern German states of Saxony and Thuringia between 2018 and 2020.
The Antifa-aligned group, dubbed the 'Hammerbande' after its preferred weapon, carried out a series of ambushes. Victims were often attacked at night with hammers, metal bars, baseball bats, pepper spray and other weapons, resulting in serious injuries including broken bones and head trauma.
On May 31, 2023, the Dresden Higher Regional Court sentenced her to five years and three months in prison for founding and leading a criminal organisation, as well as multiple counts of dangerous bodily harm, forgery of documents, theft and coercion. Prosecutors had sought eight years.
(. . .)
On the Left, Lina E. is regarded as a heroine of the 'anti-fascist resistance', and her conviction was cast as a politically motivated attack.
The trial at the Dresden Higher Regional Court, which began in 2021 and ran for almost 100 days before the May 2023 verdict, was held under tight security because of the risk of riots and political violence.
These included a heavy police presence and identity checks around the courthouse, a helicopter circling overhead during key sessions and strict controls on visitors and media.
Protests and riots broke out in several cities, with clashes with police, thrown bottles and property damage. Police union officials said at the time there had been sabotage designed to endanger officers."

Right up until 1974, women in Belgium weren't considered full independend adults and, unilke in the Arab world/ Muslim countries, were not allowed to open a bank aqccount without their husbands (or legal guardians) authorisation.
The change in law allowing #women to controol their own #finances was a bhuge deal. My mother took me with her to the bank, a different bank than the one she had her joint accounts with my dad to witness her opening one just for hersellf. 4/ -
"Think it's hot now? The next five years will smash records, UN says
WASHINGTON (AP) — In the next five years, the Earth is overwhelmingly likely to surge again and again past the international climate threshold set as safe and shatter its hottest-year record along the way, according to new United Nations climate projections.
The World Meteorological Organization also forecasts an overheating Arctic that warms nearly 3 degrees Fahrenheit (1.66 degrees Celsius) between now and 2030 and a dangerous drought with potential wildfires for the Amazon, a crucial part of Earth's natural defenses to lessen human-caused climate change. A hotter globe from the burning of coal, oil and gas means more extreme weather including floods, droughts and heat waves, scientists said."

#Book Report: Matching Minds with Sondheim
It's a book about Stephen Sondheim, focusing on his puzzles and games rather than on the stuff he's most famous for, theater. Of course, it's the puzzle-y and game-y parts that I'm interested in, because I played The Game, a variety of puzzle hunt in which teams drive around from #puzzle to puzzle over the course of a weekend. Thanks to Scott "Puzzalot" Royer, I'd learned a bit about The Game's history—and Stephen Sondheim's name kept popping up. I even buckled down and used a microfiche reader at the library to read (and transcribe) a 1969 London Times article about Sondheim's puzzle hunts and games.
Matching Minds with Sondheim sums it up:
An exploration of all the vastly different, creative offshoots of Sondheim's Murder Game can seem to go on forever. … the Los Angeles moviegoer who watched [The Last of] Sheila in 1973, was inspired to design his own multicity scavenger hunt, which inspired Disney's 1980 film Midnight Madness, which inspired one of its moviegoers to create a similar game, which he eventually took to Microsoft, …
Everything I found out hinted that there was plenty more to know: Sondheim ran puzzly treasure hunts at friends' parties; he ran public treasure hunts for charities, he brought british-style cryptic crosswords to the US, he… Anyhow, this book gets into a lot of that. I'm glad I read it.It was slow going for me. I think this book expected to be the second Sondheim bio read by a Sondheim fan, not necessarily knowledgable about games or puzzl… https://lahosken.san-francisco.ca.us/new/2026/05/28/matching-minds-with-sondheim-its-book-about-step/

There is one conversation I had with Fatima that connected her #feminist #struggle to my mothers' on an individual basis. But mostly pointed out the #transectional need and importance of #feminism. And I had the privilige of being a witness and a confidant.
Fatima arrived in Europe in the late sixties to work in a facory. She took her first salary to a bank to open an account. Much to her astonishment, she couldn't do that without her husband cosingning. 3/ -

I’m really tired of all the anthropomorphic language used with #LLMs.
Current headline on @arstechnica:“LLMs believe false statements even after explicit warnings that they're false”.
Does software “believe” the data you feed it? It processes it, operates on it, etc.
How about “LLMs treat explicitly labeled false statements as true”. Seems a lot clearer to me what’s happening than muddying the story with “belief”. Treat this like software. It is.

She was too young to sit around doing nothing, so she started volunteering. Amongst other things she stared a sewing workshop that continues through this day. Her companion in the workshop, Fathia, being much younger led the workshop and the womens group through several generations of gouvernment funded organisations. it is all about empowering women, mostly voiceless women. Bringing them together across origin, nationality, religion, age... providing a safe space andf mutual aid 2/
