DiscogsDienstag: Funhouse – Never Again

Dienstags stelle ich ein Stück aus meiner Tonträgersammlung vor, das mir Discogs zufällig ausgewählt hat, dafür gibt es dort einen Button.

Nach „The Black Album“ von The Exploding Boy vorletzte Woche steht heute eine weiteres Album aus Schweden im Focus: „Never Again“ von Funhouse. Es ist das zweite Album der Gothic-Rock-Band aus Kalmar und wurde 1996 veröffentlicht, da bestand Funhouse schon seit 10 Jahren und war zwischenzeitlich nach Malmö umgezogen.

Funhouse werden der „Second Wave Of Gothic Rock“ zugeordnet und das zementieren sie auch auf „Never Again“. Nach dem ruhigen Intro „Whispered In The Wind“ mit Sprach- und Klassiksamples geht es gleich rein in den „Goth’n’Roll“ mit Mission-Vibes, ausgelöst durch die Gitarren-Riffs und den treibenden Rhythmus. Den Unterschied macht für mich Sänger Mikael Hartle, der auch eine der Gitarren spielt und für die Texte zuständig ist. Seine sehr angenehme Bariton-Stimme empfinde ich nicht so kratzig wie die von Wayne Hussey (The Mission). Da sehe ich gerne über musikalische Anleihen hinweg, wie bei „Sea Of Dreams“, das sich beim Basslauf von „Wasteland“ bedient. Es kommt allerdings nicht darauf an, wo sich eine Band inspirieren läßt, sondern was daraus gemacht wird. Und da leisten Funhouse sehr gute Arbeit.

Heutiger Posteingang: TRAITRS – POSSESSOR

Die CD „POSSESSOR“ von TRAITRS ist endlich bei mir. Nachdem die erste Sendung, die im März verschickt wurde, lt. Nachricht von Bandcamp, nicht angekommen ist, wurde am 19.06. ein zweiter Versand gestartet. Jetzt habe ich allerdings ein lachendes und ein weinendes Auge.

Einerseits hat mir das Label ohne Mitteilung die CD-Single von „Burn In Heaven“ mitgeschickt, andererseits musste ich 11,62€ für Zoll und Auslagen bezahlen, bei 25 CAD (15,41€) Warenwert.

Aber es geht hier ja nicht um Zollpolitik, sondern um die Musik. „POSSESSOR“ von TRAITRS, wird garantiert unter den besten Post-Punk-Alben des Jahres landen – und Klez.e haben auch schon brilliant geliefert, ACTORS (the sexiest band alive) stehen noch in den Startblöcken. Hinter dem Duo stehen Sean-Patrick Nolan und Shawn Tucker aus Kanada, die seit 2015 zusammen Musik machen und mit „POSSESSOR“ nun ihren vierten Longplayer veröffentlichten.

Viereinhalb Jahre haben sie sich Zeit gelassen, einen Nachfolger für „Horses In The Abbatoir“ (2021) zu bringen und das Warten hat sich gelohnt. Empfand ich „Horses In The Abbatoir“ noch als schwächer als das zweite Album „Butcher’s Coin“ (2018), bin ich von „POSSESSOR“ restlos begeistert. TRAITRS bleiben ihrem charakteristischen Cold-Wave/Post-Punk-Sound treu, vertiefen aber die atmosphärische Dichte und experimentieren mit noch düstereren, filmischeren Klanglandschaften, die mich hier und da an The Cure Anfang der 1980er erinnern. Die Kombination aus motorischen Drumloops, schneidenden Gitarren und sphärischen Synths wirkt auf „POSSESSOR“ ausgereifter und durchdachter. Ein erstklassiges Album von Anfang bis Ende.

Klez.e – Einmal mehr mit Dir gegen die Furcht

Am Dienstag habe ich etwas über die „deutschen Smiths“ geschrieben, heute sind die „deutschen Cure“ dran, denn Klez.e veröffentlichen morgen ihr neues Album „Einmal mehr mit Dir gegen die Furcht“. Wer die CD bestellt hat, konnte sie schon letzte Woche in Händen halten, so wie ich. Und ich habe schon bei Mastodon kommentiert, dass es das beste Cure-Album des Jahres ist.

Wie es dazu kam, habe ich vor kurzem in einem Podcast mit Tobias Siebert, Sänger und Gitarrist bei Klez.e, gehört. Weil Robert Smith & Co. viele Jahre kein neues Album mehr veröffentlicht hatten, dachten Klez.e, sie machen jetzt einfach ihre eigene Cure-Platte. Das Ergebnis war 2017 das Album „Desintegration“. Ja, sogar den Albumtitel haben sie bei The Cure geliehen. 2024 folgte „Erregung“. Das musikalische Konzept haben sie bis heute beibehalten, düstere Bariton-Gitarre, schwermütige Synthies (von Daniel Moheit, der auch Bass spielt) und schleppende Drums (von Filip Pampuch), ganz im Stile der großen Vorbilder. Das nehme ich Klez.e vollkommen ab, es ist kein stumpfes Abkupfern oder billiges Kopieren, sondern ich spüre, dass sie es absolut lieben, dass sie The Cure (ver)ehren. Die Texte beschäftigen sich mit melancholischen und politischen Themen, was ja in der heutigen Zeit durchaus zu verbinden ist.

Die ersten Auskopplungen vom neuen Album, „Hymnus“, „Melancholia“ und „Call It Love“, alle bereits bei Bandcamp zu bekommen, sind schon superschön und das Album hält noch mehr bereit. Bei mir hat sich nach den ersten Hördurchgängen „La Boum“ als erster Favorit herauskristalisiert, aus dem Lied stammt auch der Albumtitel „Einmal mehr mit Dir gegen die Furcht“. Es ist ein packendes, ruhiges Liebeslied, wie es auch Robert für seine Mary hätte schreiben können, aber nicht hat. Alle anderen Songs sind aber auch grandios.

Was bei allen Parallelen zu The Cure für Klez.e spricht, ist der Gesang von Tobias Siebert, der nicht nach Robert Smith klingt, sondern wie Tobias . Er präsentiert seine ansprechende Lyrik mit viel Leidenschaft und Gefühl. Damit sorgt er dafür, dass doch eine Eigenständigkeit entsteht.

Im oben verlinkten Podcast gibt Tobias Einblicke in seinen Werdegang und seine musikalischen Vorlieben, die neben The Cure auch Dead Can Dance, Portishead und Radiohead umfassen. Er erzählt auch von seiner Tätigkeit als Producer u. a. für Phillip Boa & The Voodooclub und Juli und vom Umbau seines Resthofes, der auch sein Tonstudio beherbergt. Interessant ist auch sein Engagement bei Alles Schwarz, einem neuen Projekt mit u. a. Oswald Henke und Luci van Org, das beim WGT am 23.05.2026 Premiere feierte.

Mir gefällt Klez.e sehr gut, obwohl oder vielleicht gerade weil ich ein großer Cure-Fan bin. Klez.e klingen so, wie ich mir The Cure wünsche und es wird in jedem Takt deutlich, dass die letzten drei Alben mehr eine Hommage als eine bloße Trittbrettfahrt sind.

DiscogsDienstag: The Cure – Charlotte Sometimes

The Cure sind ein nahezu unerschöpflicher Quell guter Musik und da ich auch eine recht große Cure-Sammlung habe, ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass mir die Zufallssuche von Discogs mal wieder einen Tonträger von ihnen ausgegeben hat. Diesmal ist es die Maxi von „Charlotte Sometimes“, erschienen am 9. Oktober 1981 als Non-Album-Single. Ich habe allerdings „nur“ die 1986 von Metronome wiederveröffentlichte Version.

Das Line-Up auf dieser Maxi bestand aus Robert Smith, Simon Gallup und Laurence Tolhurst und „Charlotte Sometimes“ ist eines meiner absoluten Lieblingslieder von The Cure. Es erschien zwischen den Alben „Faith“ (1980) und „Pornography“ (1981). Ein sehr schönes Video dazu wurde auch gedreht, allerdings noch nicht von Tim Pope, mit dem The Cure später lange zusammenarbeiteten, sondern von Mick Mansfield. Der Text basiert auf einem gleichnamigen Kinderbuch aus dem Jahr 1969. Gleiches gilt für die B-Seite „Splintered In Her Head“ und den Song „The Empty World“ vom Album „The Top“ (1984).

„Charlotte Sometimes“ ist ein wunderschönes, trauriges Lied („Charlotte sometimes crying for herself, Charlotte sometimes dreams a wall around herself“), das von einer hypnotischen Bass-Linie und atmosphärischen Keyboards (gespielt von Robert) getragen wird. Die Gitarre wird eher minimalistisch eingesetzt und das Schlagzeug ist, typisch für Lol, gradlinig und kühl mit wenigen Fills.

„Splintered In Her Head“ ist dagegen ein Song, der schon das Album „Pornography“ andeutet. Es ist experimentell, fast ungeordnet, mit einem monotonen Bass und Dschungel-Trommeln, die fast das gesamte Lied unverändert durchlaufen. Dazu liefert Robert allerlei Gitarrenparts und Keyboard-Sounds. Der Gesang ist nicht klar wie auf „Charlotte Sometimes“, sondern verzerrt. Das gesamte Lied wirkt mehr düster als melancholisch.

Auf der Maxi bilden diese beiden Songs die A-Seite, auf der B-Seite befindet sich eine über 10 Minuten lange Live-Version von „Faith“, aufgenommen am 17. August 1981 in Sydney, Australien. „Faith“ vom gleichnamigen Album ist ebenfalls ein Klassiker von The Cure und ein Lied, das ich sehr mag.

Über das Coverfoto habe ich herausgefunden, dass es Mary Poole darstellt, die damalige Freundin von Robert Smith und seit 1988 seine Ehefrau. Das Foto wurde stark verfremdet und ist als Originalversion auf dem Cover der Single „Pictures Of You“ (1990) zu sehen.
