DiscogsDienstag: Siouxsie And The Banshees – Spellbound – The Collection

Nach den Singles-Collections Once Upon A Time und Twice Upon A Time stelle ich heute die dritte Kompilation von Siouxsie And The Banshees vor: „Spellbound – The Collection“ aus dem Jahr 2015. Der Untertitel lautet: „An Introduction To Siouxsie And The Banshees Selected By Siouxsie Sioux And Steven Severin“. 18 Songs haben die Sängerin und der Bassist von allen 11 Alben ausgewählt, wobei auch zwei B-Seiten dabei sind.

Über die Band im Allgemeinen muss ich im dritten Beitrag nicht mehr viel schreiben. Siouxsie, Severin und Budgie am Schlagzeug bildeten das musikalische Grundgerüst. Verschiedene Gitarristen brachten auf jedem Album ihre persönliche Note ein. John McKay (The Scream, Join Hands), John McGeoch (Kaleidoscope, Juju, A Kiss In The Dremhouse), Robert Smith von The Cure (Hyæna), John Valentine Carruthers (Tinderbox, Through The Looking Glass) und Jon Klein (Peepshow, Superstition, The Rapture) gaben sich die Gitarre in die Hand. Auf den ersten beiden Alben „The Scream“ und „Join Hands“ trommelte Kenny Morris, der am 15.01.2026 verstorben ist, bevor Siouxsies späterer Ehemann Budgie ihn ersetzte.

Die Kompilation beginnt gleich mit einer Überraschung für echte Fans, „Hong Kong Garden“ ist eine Version, die aus dem Film „Marie Antoinette“ stammt (2006) und ein neues Intro hat. Statt des gewohnten Xylophones sind hier Streicher zu hören. Der Song war auf dem Origninal-Album „The Scream“ (1978) nicht enthalten, nur auf der CD-Wiederveröffnetlichung (2006) als Bonus-Track. Von dem Album ist dann als nächstes „Mirage“ vertreten. Von „Join Hands“ (1979) kommt „Placebo Effect“ und aus „Kaleidoscope“ (1980) gibt es „Happy House“ und „Desert Kisses“. Vom Album „Hyæna“ (1984), an dem Smith mitgewirkt hat, ist „We Hunger“ mit von der Partie. Das darauffolgende Album „Tinderbox“ (1986) hält den Klassiker „Cities In Dust“ und „Land’s End“ bereit. Eine weitere B-Seite ist „Shooting Sun“ von der Single „This Wheel’s On Fire“ (1987). Den Abschluss bilden „Peek-A-Boo“ und „Turn To Stone“ aus „Peepshow“ (1988), „Kiss Them For Me“ und „Drifter“ aus „Superstition“ (1991) sowie „Not Forgotten“ aus dem letzten Album „The Rapture“ (1995). 1996 kam das Ende der Band aufgrund von zunehmenden Meinungsverschiedenheiten musikalischer Natur. Souxsie und Budgie kümmerten sich daraufhin hauptsächlich um ihr seit 1981 bestehendes Nebenprojekt The Creatures.

Mein Fazit dieser Collection fällt durchweg positiv aus. Siouxsie And The Banshees habe so unfassbar viele gute Songs gemacht, dass eine relativ kleine Auwahl immer zu kurz greift. Hier haben wir mit „Hong Kong Garden“, „Happy House“, „Spellbound“, „Cities In Dust“ und „Kiss Them For Me“ absolute Klassiker, die von zum Teil nicht so beachteten Liedern ergänzt werden, so dass eine sehr stimmige Kompilation entstand, die gut in einem Zug hörbar ist. Getreu dem letzten Lied habe ich die Hoffnung, dass Siouxsie And The Banshees nicht vergessen werden, denn sie haben einen großen Beitrag – besser viele überragende Beiträge – zum Gothic-Genre geleistet.
