2011 UK remastered reissueLast spin of this Saturday night, and I’m opening all the windows, and turning the knob FULL RIGHT.
The first two Pumpkins albums are essential cornerstones of my youth. I knew exactly where I was when I heard both for the first time.
I bought Gish on cassette from Spinnaker’s in Hyannis, Ma the same day I bought my CD copy of Dinosaur Jr.’s Green Mind (I only had enough for ONE CD). I threw Gish in my Walkman and walked the beach while my sister and her boyfriend made out, and I got my brains blown out.
I Am One, Siva, and Rhinoceros right out the gate are still in my top 10 SP tunes. Gish is heavy, gnarly, psychedelic, dreamy… ALL OF IT.
Two years later, another insane masterpiece would completely shake the foundations of my world.

I'm considering getting a secondary turntable to listen to #Vinyl. My “inner sanctum” and nerd cave is in my office upstairs...where the computers, records, board games and #StampCollection are...but sometimes I like to hang out downstairs and listen to music. So far I have a basic receiver connected to both a Wiim mini (for Tidal/Airplay) and a Raspberry Pi with a hat with optical out for listening via #Plexamp.
My aunt who is one of those Crazy Audiophiles™ just got an Audio Technica Sound Burger for listening via bluetooth - but it also has a standard headphone jack. She's the only person I know that has remotely any experience with it, and for what it is she seems impressed. Does anyone else have experience with a Sound Burger or recommend any other inexpensive turntables for me to bring a few records downstairs every now and then? This secondary stereo is in the dining room where there is a kegerator and I like to do jigsaw puzzles. (I like to live life on the edge - I abide by a 750-piece minimum. 🤘🏻)

Side 2 has a locked groove at the beginning so you just hear silence unless you catch the groove closer in. It also ends with a locked groove and there is a large gap of deadwax before the second track aptly titled “Wavejumper” in essence you have to manually jump the wave to get to that track. The track title info is etched into that deadwax in between cuts. This is art.

1994 U.S. pressingAnother great, under-appreciated 90s band that never quite broke through, but have their cult following and are beloved by other musicians.
The last record before Phelps left the band, it is full of raw, off-kilter, but VERY engaging indie rock tunes. It has a very “live” feel to it; like the band are playing in the room, and they just left the rough edges on.
The bass and drums are very prominent, which makes sense, because it’s a record that was made by Steve Albini.
A really killer record.
Sadly, their drummer Michael Dahlquist died in a 2005 car accident, when another vehicle INTENTIONALLY rammed his, killing him and two other musician friends.

And even though I like it slightly less than the follow-up, I remember hearing it for the first time and thinking “Oh thank god! It sounds really really great!”I guess I didn’t know what to expect when I read it was coming out, but I needn’t have worried.
Glacial, dreamy, melodic, shoegaze FOREVER AND EVER.
