  3. Figured out a workaround for #Plex recently nuking the #Alexa skill which seriously impacted my playing of music from my digital library.

Had an older iPad being underutilized. It can broadcast #bluetooth to the #Echo. So, had a version of PlexAmp on it and *poof*, now it's a dedicated music player. iPad running PlexAmp bluetooth -> Echo line out -> Edifiers. Since Echo is managing the audio, any regular notifications come through.

Of course, it's more manual, and doesn't leverage the routine/skill combination that I used to use: alexa routine that asks plex to play the 'whatever' playlist'.

I guess if I want to go the next step, I could set up a pi with voice recognition, playlist management etc, but that sounds like a bigger 'winter' project. This'll do Grommit, this'll do.

  7. @stefano Wow! It was at the very beginning of the project I think. I paid 75€ ten years ago.
It works well on many systems like NVidia Shield Android TV (client and server) and #FreeBSD of course!
I tried #Jellyfin and it works well too but I still prefer #Plex. I love #Plexamp for listening to music: you can transcode the quality on-the-fly from #FLAC to #Opus to save your data quota on your mobile phone plan.

  13. I decided that the most comfortable and future-proof way for me to listen to music is to buy albums and listen to them like I did before music streaming services existed.

The motivation came from a conversation I had with @eclecticpassions, Morgan and @autumnstuff during #IWC2026!

I found out that Plex has a music player and it’s supposed to be good. The thing is: I need a plex server where my music lives. There’s an old Lenovo ideapad that doesn’t perform at all under Win10 anymore so I installed Linux Mint yesterday and set up a Plex server today! It’s working! I can stream my music on my laptop and phone from the old laptop I wanted to throw away.

Now I’m trying to set up that the music can be stored on a network drive (HDD connected to the router) so I can transfer new music comfortably on my main laptop. Let’s hope this works! I have very limited experience with Linux but Mint makes it comfortable enough. Working with the terminal is scary though but with the help of tutorials I worked my way through this.

This old thing is still really slow though.

  14. Is Spotify the only music streaming service that lets you organize albums and playlists? Really?

And, is there an alternative to plex/plexamp that let's you do that? #spotify #plexamp
