1982 U.S. reissueThis is where Eno started to veer away from rock and leaving into the more ambient music that would come later.
There are 14 tracks here, and only five of them have vocals.Robert Fripp, Phil Collins, and John Cale pitching in to add a little magic, and electric guitars are played with mallets, while the acoustic piano is fed through a Leslie speaker.
Robert Christgau (who I don’t always agree with) perhaps had the definitive description of this album, which sums it up perfectly:
“The aural equivalent of a park on the moon – oneness with nature under conditions of artificial gravity".
It’s a pretty great record, and a very important one in the grand scheme of Eno’s career.

BOSS HOG
Drinkin', Lechin', & Lyin'
1989 U.S. pressingA super noisy, garage-y and bluesy kinda punk record; super loud and abrasive, thanks to the “production” work of the late, great Steve Albini.
This album is all about attitude, confrontation and energy than it is about any kind of refinement. It has a very live and off-the-cuff feel, and although Cristina Martinez’s vocals can be a little off-putting, they work because the band is so visceral.
An interesting record for fans of Jon Spencer’s more refined work in Blues Explosion.
All of the full lengths that followed this E.P. greatly pale in comparison to this. Very disappointing.
This is the only Boss Hog record you’ll need.

Human League: Dare (A&M SP-4892, 1982)
I heard “Don’t You Want Me” at J. Crew at the mall a few years ago and decided those synths would sound great on #vinyl. I was not wrong but this album could use a few more good songs than it has.

1981-1982
1982 Canada 12” E.P. pressingNew Order had released a pair of non-album singles from ‘81 to ‘82, and none of those 5 tracks were on a full-length album at the time.
This E.P. was created to gather those singles for the North American market, as the UK 🇬🇧 singles were a bit more difficult to find.
The only thing that would make this better is if the debut single of “Cerrmony” b/w “In A Lonely Place” was also on it, but I totally get why it’s not.
“Temptation” is still SO great, and “Procession” could have been a single on its own.
A good friend of mine and I had a lengthy discussion last year while I was back visiting NYC.
We both are of the belief that Joy Division would have kind of ended up sounding like New Order anyway, as the final few JD demos inform us. PARTICULARLY the early New Order.

“16 Tapes For A Penny” sounded like a good deal.
It was a deal I took disgusting advantage of MANY times as a kid, using multiple mailing addresses and aliases, AND never buying a single thing after that.Sometimes, i just picked a random thing I’d never heard of to help round out the list, and Holy Smoke was one of those.
I had never heard of Murphy at that point (or Bauhaus for that matter), but I remember instantly liking this album. Particularly “The Sweetest Drop” and “Let Me Love You”.
Great memories of this record, and it still sounds great to me.

1984 U.S. pressingSince everyones’s all “spaced out” with space fever, this seemed appropriate.
The soundtrack is great, but I’d like to use this opportunity to defend 2010 as a film.
It’s actually a pretty good movie, and an engaging continuation of the story; what happened to the vessel, Bowman, and what went wrong.
It may be more conventional and dialogue heavy, but holds its own after Kubrick set a near impossible standard.
The soundtrack to 2010 is less abstract, but suspenseful and emotional. Also very different than the original film’s soundtrack of pre-existing classical, but very effective for the sequel.
