1978 Canada 7” singleA little whimsy and nostalgia to end my night before bed.
I remember watching an old re-run of SNL as a kid where Steve Martin was dressed in pharaoh garb performing this ridiculous song. I remember saying “What the hell was THAT?!?!”
The “uncommons” are actually members of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and that SNL performance was where this was born; a completely ridiculous novelty song written about the Treasures Of Tutankhamun travelling exhibit that toured through American cities for three years (1976-1979).
Steve Martin is a fucking genius.

Today it helpfully informed me that you can take the lyrics to Weenie Man (the old camp song that starts "I know a wiener man / he owns a hotdog stand"), and sing them to the music of #Slade's "Run Runaway", or vice versa.

Everytime I hear this I’m struck by how it’s so fully developed, musically.
The video is cool too, but the song itself is just perfect. Well crafted, celebratory lyrics, plus some cool horn sounds, particularly the little baritone sax solo near the end.
