  1. Apparently there is no good STL viewer for (let alone ), let alone one that auto-refreshes when the file changes.

And @alpinelinux doesn't have :openscad: packaged for , so using alpine doesn't work either...

Leaves online STL viewers where you have to re-navigate to the STL when it changes. Meh, but it works.

Context: works perfectly on to do parametric 3D design. Just an STL viewer with auto-refresh is missing.

  2. Which #RSS / #Atom reader are you using on #Android? I'm still in love with #Flym but sadly the author decided to stop development after #Google has introduced some new mandatory rules for news apps: support.google.com/googleplay/

App should be #FreeSoftware / #FOSS. Might consider to setup a server software to synchronize my feeds across multiple devices.

  3. Google claim that their upcoming laptop is the "perfect partner to your Android phone" because you can "access files from your phone as if they live on your laptop" - but did you know that this is already possible, no special laptop model needed?

KDE Connect is completely free and open source software (FOSS) to link your devices together, supported by the @kde charity. It works on almost all phone models, and it does more than just allow you to access your phone's storage. For example, with KDE Connect your phone immediately becomes a remote control for music or videos playing on your laptop or desktop PC!

Don't get drawn in by the slick marketing - you don't need AI to make your life easier with technology, and most of the features large software companies such as Google are promoting have already been thoughtfully implemented by dedicated volunteers in the FOSS community.

  4. The Android app I was using for pixel arting on my phone, has gone and made exporting files a paid feature.

The thing is, I intended to pay the 20€ when I had a bit of money to spare, which isn't now, but this is a dick move I won't reward.

I'd rather use FOSS anyway, so: any recommendations? F-Droid seems a bit dry. Thanks.

  5. Best compromise seems to be the Volla and Morena approach: Distribute Android tech and try to ungoogle it in a way you‘ll have a working mobile in the end. There‘s a really good and huge FOSS app community shipping via @fdroidorg, but seems their life will get hard starting with September.

  9. Is there some nice #foss alternative to #öffi/#offi for #android? It currently crashes when I search for a route and did not appear to get any updates recently. On #gnome I like to use #Railway/#diebahn (apps.gnome.org/en/DieBahn/) but I don't use #mainlinelinux with #phosh or #gnome on my dailydriver.

  10. "The FOSS world pivoted away from the Debian-based n900 to Google's Android for the mobile world, which had the veneer of FOSS but without ever seeming to meaningfully deliver real practical user freedom. And I got bitter and disillusioned with my dreams.

To see Zacchae's FOSS cyborg setup revived all my interests."

  11. I am looking for a FOSS alternative to Google Messages.

The main feature I want to keep is "device pairing:" I should be able to link it to my computer and type out messages with a physical keyboard. This is important because I don't want to write a long message on my phone, and some people I communicate with are unable to use another messaging system that works on desktops out-of-the-box.

I've tried several SMS apps on F-Droid, but none of them seem to have this feature.

    I do
not need all the advanced features of RCS, nor do I need E2EE (because most of the people I use Google Messages to talk to are on iPhones).

  16. Aves Libre is a #foss #opensource gallery and metadata explorer for Android
Like many others, I got fed up with Google's constant backup nags, and switched to find:
    * A beautiful, sleek, and performant design. (I can quickly find landscape photos with the Mosaic view! 🥳)
    * A customizable photo-action toolbar.
    * A way to browse photos by country or size or anything else.
    * A peace of mind it won't randomly send my photos to Google.
