  1. CW: My opinion on the "Halium vs Mainline" thing

"Cool, more phones that run a Linux userspace!"

    #LinuxMobile #Halium #MainlineLinux

  2. kickstarter but its for "having a really good foss dev port mainline linux to one of the kinda openish phones" (lets say, pixel)

    i'm so done with android
    #mainlinelinux #phones #pixel

  3. Is there some nice #foss alternative to #öffi/#offi for #android? It currently crashes when I search for a route and did not appear to get any updates recently. On #gnome I like to use #Railway/#diebahn (apps.gnome.org/en/DieBahn/) but I don't use #mainlinelinux with #phosh or #gnome on my dailydriver.

  4. FINALLY ACHIEVED MY DREAM OF OWNING A LINUX PHONE.

The Pixel 3A arrived today so @AmyIsCoolz helped me install @postmarketOS on it. 😅

It works absolutely well - I'll be mainly using this for my Denaro / Spending records. It's AMAZING!

  5. OH YEAH WE HAVE LIFTOFF err i mean display #mediatek #mt8167 #mainlinelinux

So much time spent debugging and the main issue wasn't even my fault, not even in terms of applying patches without reading, no–

    mt8167-mmsys.h was broken upstream.

Missing a field for all entries, 4 fields instead of 5.

Helpfully in the C programming language omitted fields in static data just default to zero initialization. Without warning, because that's used intentionally all the time.

    Fuck C for real tho

  6. #mediatek #mainlinelinux moment: the boot time simple framebuffer on this MT8167 tablet actually jumps around on every boot, it's impossible to use it without parsing the weird ATAGS properties. I wrote a hack patch to parse that in simpledrm, and finally got some display from Linux! For a few moments, it gets turned off by the time it's fully booted. But that's a great discovery, now I know there's something getting powered off that shouldn't be, so if I find out what it is.. full mediatek-drm display will start actually displaying stuff as well?

  7. Any one out there owning a Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e (Wifi edition) and willing to help porting PostmarketOS to this device?

I got the downstream LineagOS device specific kernel booting on my device.
Currently no display working but ssh over usb is working.

Next step would be to get the mainline kernel booting on the device. This should not be to difficult for someone with experience, as the soc (sdm670) has already mainline support.

  8. Recent observation about #LinuxMobile phones:
The #PinePhone market price seems to drop more and more. I have now seen multiple people who don't want their device anymore.
Probably this is due to the more performant and feature full devices like #oneplus6 or #GooglePixel getting good software support for mainline Linux, thanks to @postmarketOS and in particular @cas and @rmader :) (and probably more I don't know yet about ;)

  9. I've been told that this tablet can't be that bad if it runs phosh because phosh is heavy and that I should try XFCE.

Naturally, I've installed full #GNOME Shell :blobcatthinkOwO:

  10. This cheap Acer laptop with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c chip can run mainline Linux software (mostly)

The Acer Aspire 1 (A114-61) is a cheap laptop with a 14 inch full HD display, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c Gen 1 processor, it launched in 2021 as a budget notebook running Windows 10 in S Mode software.
But developers have been working to add mainline Linux support, and with a recent addition to the upstream […]

  11. A growing number of cheap handheld retro game consoles can run mainline Linux

The Steam Deck is probably the best known handheld gaming PC with a Linux-based operating system, but a number of cheap handhelds from companies like Anbernic and Powkiddy also run Linux-based software… but they tend to use custom kernels.
But when Phoronix reported this week that developer Chris Morgan submitted some code to bring support for a mainline Linux […]
