  4. I'm trying to stay optimistic that things will swing back the other way. Right now all the major platforms are crammed full of AI but I think we'll start seeing non-AI alternatives over time (I'm thinking of things like OSes, dev tools, and art tools here), they're just not gonna come from big tech.

  6. Job-Angst wg. #AgenticCoding?

  8. Python Tip #291 (of 365):

    Check regex matches with the walrus operator.

    Do this:
    if match := UNITS_RE‍.search(string):
    return match.groups()

    Not this:
    match = UNITS_RE‍.search(string)
    if match:
    return match.groups()

  9. Fun with Python:

    from mod import X

    imports the **value** of mod.X and binds it to a variable named X in the importing module

    Which is great fun if you think you can change mod.X by

    X = X + 1

    This is just local in your importing module, as mod.X is a separate variable.Well, well.🤦‍♀️ 😩

  14. GPU dri/by-path for Docker Compose how?

    My Jellyfin config has some YAML like this.

    # Sometimes work
    devices:
    - /dev/dri/renderD128:/dev/dri/renderD128
    - /dev/dri/card0:/dev/dri/card0

    Occasionally when I reboot my server, I end up with no card0 and instead I have /dev/dri/card1. This breaks my Jellyfin server…

    I noticed there is also dri/by-path, which I’m guessing is a more stable path than a card index… however, doing this doesn’t work for me.

    # No work
    devices:
    - /dev/dri/by-path/pci-0000:00:02.0-render:/dev/dri/renderD128
    - /dev/dri/by-path/pci-0000:00:02.0-card:/dev/dri/card0

    I tried with and without quotes and the result is the same. Error to start. I’m guessing Docker is failing to correctly parse the string because of the colons in pci-0000:00:02.0-card…

    How’s everyone else handling this problem? I’ve been updating my compose.yaml every time the index switches, card0 to card1 to card0… but this is getting annoying now. (This is a worse problem now that I’m running Fedora IoT!)

    Any thoughts?

  19. Cool Link: Why don’t more developers “use the platform”?
    This complements the previous link I shared nicely: most developers don’t properly use the platform, but why? This goes into possible reasons without being judgemental, and to me they make a lot of sense. When I first started going all-in into front-end development I’ve been a part of all of those…

  20. The things people do with Rovo and Xray AI are workslop. Appearance of work, without thinking and deciding on what this plan should really look like and why. They don’t even build a transformation track, just random generated artifacts.

    I really believe the good things are all with dev environment integrations that turn things to actions not artifacts. Remember the testing as performance vs artifact creation? That really is visible for not being able to trust ‘manual testers’ with real tools.

  23. 🐍 Some people claim that #LLMs have an huge preference for #Python: whatever the task, they will choose Python to implement it, even if another language would obviously fit better. Is it because they're better at writing Python than other languages, or is it an unreasonable default, baked in by accident by the language's popularity?

    Turns out, there is research about this, and the answer is quite clear 👉️ zansara.dev/posts/2026-10-19-i

  25. the only reason i'm not going to switch to any kind of #bsd from #linux - even though linus torvalds fully supports ai & insults people (like me) who hate it AND the head linux maintainers are apparently all in on ai too - is that my dipshit brain wouldn't be able to cope with learning yet another operating system's syntax. especially 1 that has even fewer packages that work on it. it's the same reason i make sure whatever linux distro uses a debian base.

    i couldn't even handle manjaro linux because it's based on arch, even there's a debian to arch package converter avaliable. plus while i'm tech savvy enough these days to be able to use linux with only a handful of problems i can usually solve, i'm not a proper programmer, so i can't fork the linux kernel like torvalds says i should. i'm a shitty web-dev at best. i'm basically at the mercy of losers who think - & i quote - "[anti-ai people] have lost their minds" & i fucking hate that fact.

    i know more a little bit more about how computers work than the average person. that's it. and linux users with their heads up each other's arses WANT normies to use linux?????

    lmao go outside.

    try successfully fixing an elderly relative's computer for once. :)))))
