  1. "And if thought and emotion can persist in this way so long after the brain that sent them forth has crumpled into dust, how vitally important it must be to control their very birth in the heart, and guard them with the keenest possible restraint."

~ Algernon Blackwood, born today, 1869.

  2. My copy of the 1938 Penguin Books edition of 'The Centaur' by Algernon Blackwood. I'm rather pleased to own a 1930s Penguin, especially one by a favourite author. #BookChatWeekly #PenguinBooks #AlgernonBlackwood #paperbacks #fantasyfiction

  3. Reading Algernon Blackwood right now, and I notice the author's absolutely frightening understatement -and understatement in weird fiction is stronger than explanation.
Last read: The Decoy, and this is a good example for #PhantomsFriday.

  4. My copy of the John Silence stories by Algernon Blackwood bears the bookplate of bibliophile and gourmand A J A Symonds. In the biography by his author brother Julian, we are told that A J A 'professed a great admiration for Poe, for Algernon Blackwood ... [1/2 #AlgernonBlackwood #BookChatWeekly

  5. Just finished reading the first of the John Silence stories by Algernon Blackwood, A Psychical Invasion.

Totally see what's meant when I read stuff talking about Silence as a proto-Kolchak and proto-Mulder. Doctor doing pro Bono work going and investigating the weird spiritual complaints of patients and cataloging and solving them.

Looking forward to the other five stories.

  6. Reading info on this one, looks like a proto-Mulder. I like the supernatural detective trope and it looks like this is one of the originators of the trope.

  7. Pilene

  8. Algernon Blackwood's novella "The Man Whom the Trees Loved" is an astonishingly queer story of nature and loss.

A quick browse and listen on Librivox finds an acceptable to me reading by #MatthewWinterrowd, a human in my understanding, from America, just as #AlgernonBlackwood himself was.

This reading is contained within a collection of readings.
So there is a little complexity involved.

But for God's sake, don't go listening to The Willows if you can't handle a little complxity.

  13. Any weird fiction fans here? I'm talking about the real stuff, from Weird Tales of the 1920s/30s.

I got into the genre in the usual way, through Lovecraft. And in the usual way I started exploring work of various writers in his circle, and the work of writers whom Lovecraft admired.
