  2. I had plans to check things off my to-do list today. Then an owl flew into a pickup truck and oh well.

  3. We ended up with just a few inches of snow in our part of the #Adirondacks yesterday. Snow does not stop the locals from going out for breakfast.

  4. I am thankful that the local mechanic had time to put the studded snow tires on my car yesterday, because it was just in time for a storm that wasn't supposed to hit us to veer north. My friends were outside waiting for breakfast despite the weather. I love how squirrels use their tails like a coat.

Happy Thanksgiving to those in the USA. May it be a day of respite.

  5. It is finally raining here so maybe New York will have fewer wildfires next week. I am struggling a bit with some personal and family stuff in addition to *waves hands around* all that out there. The squirrels don't have any advice for me but they make me smile, so that's something.

  6. I spent the weekend at NY's #WildlifeRehabilitation conference, where there was as much discussion about compassion fatigue, intersectionality, and regulatory ambiguity as there was wildlife care, and it was about time. The public and the state agencies expect miracles and perfect PR from overworked volunteers who get no funding, and it sucks.

I am glad to be home now with my wild friends, enjoying coffee in my new mug. (SSD = silver sulfadiazine, a topical treatment we use for everything.)

  7. Hard times require cute turtles.

Lux, African sideneck turtle, pet rescue surrendered by keeper due to housing instability. She would rather I scratched her shedding shell with a toothbrush than take pictures, but I can't resist that face.

  8. Today is stressful. Please enjoy this turtle.

New Guy is my most recently rescued red eared slider. He was an emergency pet turtle intake after being left behind when tenants moved out and the landlord recognizing how poorly he had been kept and seeking help. Over the weekend he got a big tank set up as his permanent home.

  9. Wildlife rehabbers see the #hurricane horrors that don't often get reported. An uncountable number of wild beings have been killed, injured, or displaced in the flooding. Many rehabbers lost everything but are still trying to help.

NY rehabbers filled a truck with donated supplies heading to WNC and are working on a second truckload. And GA rehabbers got permission from the state to temporarily care for FL wildlife patients so they can evacuate.

  10. I've been having a sad wildlife rehabilitation season on top of other challenges, but today was brightened by the first turtle to hatch in my incubator this year. Two more are working their way out and there may be more viable eggs in the clutch. These eggs were removed from a painted turtle who didn't survive being hit by a car on her way to nest.

  11. Last night I celebrated the summer solstice by releasing a snapping turtle. He had been hit by a car at the end of April on his way across a busy road to the river where he spends his summers. Luckily his finder watches for him every year to help him cross and was able to get him into care right away. He healed up and finally made it to the river, where he swam off into the sunset.

  12. It's disappointing that there's no ice on the lake yet and the snow we got has mostly melted, but whatever. We make our own fun.

  13. On Thursday a rep from #CenterForBiologicalDiversity presented to the @citizensclimate #Wildlife Action Team during our monthly meeting. It was so good I was taking pictures with my phone even though I was the one recording it. I co-lead the team dedicated to reminding Citizens' Climate Lobby that #Extinction and #ClimateChange are the same crisis and solutions should consider all beings.

  14. I was late bringing his dinner and he was actually out of his hide. That never happens. Poor opossum would really like to go free but needs to finish healing and regrow his hair to have a chance out in the cold. You can see the bare strip behind his shoulder where he was stitched up. There was a degloving on his rear thigh not visible in the picture that is still healing. Sorry, bud, it's a few more weeks of easy meals for you.

  19. I just finished my #WildlifeRehabilitation logs. I had 67 animals in care this year. 49 were reptiles (3 snakes, 46 #turtles). Half died unfortunately, which makes me sad in the remembering. 12 turtles are still with me, along with an opossum. I had 3 #frogs this year, all released. I like rehabbing frogs. They are surprisingly resilient and appreciate free meals.

(Pictured is a wood turtle who is staying for the winter. He also appreciates free meals.)

  24. Too cold to bring turtles to a fundraising event at a mall for our regional wildlife rehabilitation organization, so I got to be raven minder. Her name is Merlina. Wyatt, in the background, is a Eurasian eagle owl. They are both permitted educational ambassadors.

  25. Two weeks ago I took in a young #VirginiaOpossum found playing dead and actually bleeding in the finder's yard. The vet stitched up two large wounds on his body that looked like he had narrowly escaped a predator like a fox or coyote. So far this is the best picture I've gotten because, unless I pull him out for meds and crate cleaning thus occupying my hands, he hides, as he should. Anyway, please look at this opossum. 🙂
