The nuclear family -- as has been enforced by monarchial, state, and corporate powers -- is an exceedingly recent invention.
Humans have been around for hundreds of thousands of years.

This year, I'm also working on launching my own "Boots for the People" donations drive. To get workboots donated to marginalized, newly housed folks who are trying to make a living from new job & for longtime housed folks living under poverty line who can't afford quality work boots.
I'll need some local volunteers in #Saanich & #VictoriaBC #VancouverIsland areas to help me with picking up/dropping off donations, help with spreading the good word out & help with obtaining free or discounted printed promo materials for the donations drive.

It was capitalism. Capitalism killed "the village", forced people into cities, increased the cost of living such that most households require both parents to work (plus all the aunts, uncles and grandparents). Wildlife rehabbers see the #hurricane horrors that don't often get reported. An uncountable number of wild beings have been killed, injured, or displaced in the flooding. Many rehabbers lost everything but are still trying to help.
NY rehabbers filled a truck with donated supplies heading to WNC and are working on a second truckload. And GA rehabbers got permission from the state to temporarily care for FL wildlife patients so they can evacuate.

Some contemporary preachers talk about joy as a litmus test, where someone has to doubt salvation if they don’t have enough joy. Clark, too, would have us focus on joy, but on increasing the joy of others.

CW: unsolicited opinions on childcare from a non-parent
It's so historically weird that I've lived my adult life with practically no interactions with children, except when their guardians were around to mediate.
The corrolary is even weirder - growing up almost never interacting freely with an adult who isn't a parent or paid to watch you.

This week we were able to provide a young child who didn't have a bicycle helmet—and whose single parent didn't have money to buy one—with this Kali Protectives helmet. How'd we manage that on Bicycling Monterey's tiny budget (average gross contributions of $3 a day)? Bicycle helmets are required by California law for minors (youth younger than age 18).
