Today's small friends are a male house finch drooping his wings to show off the goods, and a young or female ruby-throated hummingbird caught at the feeder.

Good morning! Today's small friend is this female or juvenile ruby-throated hummingbird. (I suspect a juvenile because I had the feeder down for cleaning when it first arrived, and it just kept flying around the pole looking for it.)

Today's small friends are this female house finch checking out the newly cleaned and refilled hummingbird feeder, and the blue jay on the suet feeder in the background absolutely horfing a chunk of suet. 😂

Today's small friend is a new visitor to the yard: a juvenile red-bellied woodpecker. Unfortunately, these shots are super washed-out because the camera was in direct sun and the woodpecker was in the shade. But look at this absolute goober of a dinosaur!

Yesterday I noticed that one of the heads of a sunflower out on my front stoop was getting raided before the petals had even fallen off. Based on my keen knowledge of the sunflower's natural predators, I developed a theory and I staked out the front door with a camera.
Today's small friend is this yellow bandit, caught orange-beaked after returning to the scene of the crime. 💛 🖤 🤍🧡

Today's small friend is this even babier downy woodpecker. Either there are two families in the neighborhood or one female laid two eggs that developed at WILDLY different speeds, because there's a fully fledged juvenile around and then there's this helpless little yelling bird. 🖤 🤍❤️

Good morning! Today's small friends are the young blue jays who have been absolutely screaming around the yard the last few days as they learn how to be birds.

Good morning! Today's small friend is this juvenile downy woodpecker. It's on its own now, which means it's probably been out of the nest for at least three weeks, but it's still learning that it's unwise to try and horn in on starling time at the suet. It's very cute, though. 🖤 🤍❤️
(I use "it" here because both male and female juveniles have the reddish cap, so it's pretty much impossible to distinguish.)
