  1. #helloworld #danish #learningmastodon Ny på mastodon. I første omgang er udfordringen at finde folk, og finde rundt. Jeg har fundet mange relevante (for mig) profiler ved at snage i andres følgere. 2. Those profiles that just say 'replica from Twitter'... hate having to go to birdsite to find out more, but discovered reader can add notes to their profiles for future reference (presumably only visible in your own feed, or mischief would abound:) So useful! #LearningMastodon

  3. #TIL about #Mastodon bots! It was a real joy to get my hands a bit dirty and see and hear a post get pushed to the feed. Found this tutorial as a starting point and highly recommend it for newbies. They’ve made this process really fun so far.

Hoping to have something to show in the morning. Here’s a hint. 🎱

    Interesting -
    • on the Toot! app, it gave a huge chunk of text

    • on the MetaText app, a callout box for the link

    • on the Mastodon app, only the link itself

Still #LearningMastodon and still trying to decide between apps...

Grateful for any tips, comments, or suggestions you may have

  5. On Twitter, this is called a "tweet". What has everyone decided to call this here?

  6. 🙋‍♂️ Ayuda amigos de #Mastodon. ¿Como puedo localizar/buscar usuarios que estén en servidores distintos al mio? Gracias de antemano.

  7. To those creative types thinking about starting your own Mastodon server with the intent of growing your community, I strongly recommend FIRST listening to Ep.510 of @atpfm (start at around 1:02 timestamp): atp.fm/510

  8. PSA: I still barely know what I’m doing on here— your patience is much appreciated! 🙏🏽😅 #LearningMastodon #NewInTown

  9. I keep seeing toots about following hashtags on here, but I can't find any option that lets me do that. Is it something only available on some instances? Does it require a third-party plug-in? Does "following a hashtag" mean something different on mastodon than it does on other social media platforms?

  10. Gentle reminder to Mastodon newcomers: be aware that communities existed here BEFORE the Twitter migration. Quote from a Mastodon longtimer (for original, look up "Mastodon Home Invasion"):

"[Twitter users] been taught to behave in certain ways. To chase likes and retweets/boosts. To promote themselves. To perform. All of that sort of thing is anathema to most of the people who were on Mastodon a week ago. It was part of the reason many moved to Mastodon in the first place. "

  11. Question for tech-savvy Mastodon gurus out there: In theory, can a Mastodon Instance be hosted on someone's laptop? I have NO intention of doing so myself, of course, but am curious. If the answer is YES, then it's one more reason for new sign-ups to do some research before picking an Instance to settle into (e.g. if the individual hosting the Instance is not backing up info and the laptop breaks down/is stolen etc.)

    Thanks for any insights!

  12. After a week or so of #twittermigration a few things on #learningmastodon:

💛 I love the culture of content warning and alt text for images. Taking care of strangers & not having to manage everything through blocks/mutes.

🤗 Hashtags and the federated timeline really work for connecting with new people.

⭐️ No algorithm and no promoted content makes engagement more meaningful, searches more relevant, and numbers less important.

☎️ I miss DM groups, but we are finding each other in other apps (#discord), and there’s something about a small instance community. #beigelove

🦐 It is becoming clear that a shrimp did not fry this rice.

  13. Thanks to those who answered my Qs about hashtags & searching, esp @mntle @stonebear & @mojomoomoo.

CONFIRMED: Neither hashtags nor searches are global. Searches are Local, but will search all posts that your Instance has seen incoming from other servers. If a post is boosted on another server, then post is searchable on that instance also. NOT ALL SERVERS RECEIVE ALL POSTS. "It would make running a server near impossible for a small use, due to the drive space requirements."

  14. A question for @stonebear and other Mastodon tech gurus: I've been told by several of my kidlit friends that Mastodon hashtags searches ARE global. If I misspoke in my blog post, I would be more than happy to post a correction (esp if I could include a supporting source).

Could someone out there please explain (in layman's terms) how Mastodon hashtag searches work, in terms of searching across multiple instances? Thanks so much!

  15. While I am really enjoying Mastodon and will continue using it for connecting with kindred spirits and conversations, I will NOT be switching away from Twitter. I've written up a blog post explaining why: debbieohi.com/2022/11/mastodon #LearningMastodon

  16. I've heard privately from a number of Mastodon users and here's my newbie take: Mastodon was originally created for those who did not feel welcome on mainstream social networks. Emphasis is on community, NOT outreach and discoverability. Many of the features Twitter users may miss (quote tweet, global search etc) were purposely NOT included to help protect these marginalized communities.

Also, I don't blame some Fediverse longtimers from resenting influx of new users. #LearningMastodon cont'd
