@jds @AGuyChasingPhotos I agree, just make sure you find a school that primarily does #freeDiving and not just as a side gig to Scuba. I’ve recently seen this with my 75yo dad who started (in order to go to #DeepWeek in #Croatia): His school was ok, but they didn’t focus on #equalisation using #Frenzel . If you pick a Freediving school you get more out of it. Therefore, stick with more Freediving specific agencies e.g. #molchanovs or #aida and maybe not #padi or #ssi…

Finished reading this fascinating account by Gary Smith of the story of #AudreyMestre & #PipinFerreras, a famous #freediving couple that travelled the world breaking records until a tragic end. It's a #longread so settle in, or bookmark to return.
I'm not into #diving, but since the whole #oceangate debacle primed public attention on deep underwater risks, this piqued my interest. Interesting parallels with #narcissism and lack of #safety oversight and adherence. -

I've had a fun night yesterday. Went with a local #Venturer #Scout group (Beachhaven) to do a water safety and #freediving session. The 11 youth *loved* it all, and got lots of boxes ticked for their water safety badges up to level 7 (highest level). On top they've learnt heaps about themselves and how their body reacts, what the signals mean, and how to (re-) act on them, so that they would remain safe (e.g. while #spearfishing) or be able to spot trouble and assist.
It was heaps of work to get the pool across the line by making the case, planning, documenting safety protocols, writing safety documents, having sufficient supervision ratios, etc. But it was well worth it, and we want to do it again (next term or so).
A highlight was to also have a new venturer invested under water in the pool. The Scout Promise was more like a 'hummed column of bubbles', but it made us all happy.
Also, I finally got a photo and some video footage of doing a 70 m demo DNF swim in my freediving gear while wearing my scarf and woggle ;-)

Diving in #newquay bay yesterday. Thinking Amphorina Farrani, the #nudibranchs are slowly appearing on the northern coast of #cornwall. This was tricky to photo, digging into the small animal turf. "The fan mussel Pinna nobilis, the largest bivalve endemic to the Mediterranean Sea, has experienced a near-total collapse since 2016 due to mass mortality events (MMEs) primarily caused by the protozoan parasite Haplosporidium pinnae. Now listed as Critically Endangered, the species is considered functionally extinct across most of its native range. However, recent surveys in the Thau Lagoon (southern France) revealed a large resilient population, with total abundance previously estimated at over 100,000 individuals. Within this population, exceptionally high densities were recorded along the Tocs sandbank system and the adjacent Quilles sector. Densities were quantified by freediving-based 100 m² belt transects (50 m × 2 m; n = 89) across 15 stations. Our study reports unprecedented densities, with a global mean of 78.6 ± 8.7 individuals/100 m² and a maximum of 511 individuals/100 m², surpassing previously reported values. Extrapolation within a conservative 180-ha core survey area yields a total abundance exceeding 1.4 million individuals."
