Seagulls pick at the remains of a young adult female Gray whale, on the beach at MacKerricher State Park, as the waves begin to reclaim it. A volunteer at the site said scientists took a portion of her spine to study, because it had an unusual curvature. She may have starved to death, as many have, due to ocean heating killing off food sources. She was originally discovered on Wednesday, freshly dead. #MendocinoCoast #whale

Funnily it also tells a little side story about a whale stranded in the River Thames a few years ago.

Whale watching in Monterey Bay last weekend. Three moms and their calves form pod CA51, plus Jimmy from CA50 hanging around, showing off a huge dorsal fin. The moms would surface and then the calves would surface right next to them. I found the calves chubby and cute (caveat: I'm not a sea lion).

#CapeCod researcher from #WHOI says newly found 1949 #whale recording is critical discovery: "I hit play on that WAV file and it was goosebumps. The recording starts, and the voice comes on, and he says 'It's the 7th of March, 1949, a little note about the #hydrophone, and then you hear the plop. And then right there is the song. I'm getting goosebumps right now thinking about it."
Scientists now believe it could be the oldest recorded whale song ever discovered.

Lootboxen und virtuelle Währungen sind Ideen aus der Glücksspielbranche, und wie dort macht man seinen größten Umsatz mit wenigen Spieler:innen, den Whales (Wikipedia). Hier steht der Verdacht im Raum, dass man für Glücksspiel anfällige Menschen gnadenlos ausnimmt und ins Unglück stürzt.
Eine kriminelle Bande hat interne Daten der Firma Rockstar Games veröffentlicht, die das Verhalten der Branche zu bestätigen scheinen. Mit GTA Online nimmt das Unternehmen täglich rund 1,3 Millionen US-Dollar ein. Satte 75% der Einnahmen stammen dabei von den Shark Cash Cards, der virtuellen Währung. Die restlichen 26% stammen von den Menschen, die eine GTA+ Membership abschließen.
Und, wie viele Whales sorgen für den Umsatz von jährlich ca eine halbe Milliarde US-Dollar? Schwer zu sagen. Aber wir wissen jetzt, dass nur ein ganz kleiner Anteil der Spieler:innen überhaupt Geld für Shark Cash Cards und GTA+ ausgibt: 4%.
Rockstar Games ganzer Umsatz bei GTA Online kommt also von lediglich 4% der aktiven Nutzer:innen.
Das klingt nicht gesund. Für die Menschen, die zu den vier Prozent zählen.

The #whale was discovered Saturday near Raymond, Washington, in the Willapa River, which feeds into the #ocean at Willapa Bay. A number of #GrayWhales are currently in the bay on their 5,000-mile (8,000-kilometer) spring migration from birthing grounds in Baja California, Mexico, north to feeding grounds in Alaska.

boats guided him north. That way the young male humpback escaped a fishing boat. Then he got stuck again on a sandbank (near Wismar) and was able to free himself with the rising sea level.
