We are moving from building for users to building like nature. At Silphium Design, we just published a look at the shift from traditional to biomimetic design. Using my computer science and sociology background, I explore why this paradigm shift is essential for modern UX. It is about creating systems that feel as efficient as biology. Let us rethink how we design together.

Design is a balance between the familiar and the unique. At Silphium Design, we just compared custom shapes versus standard ones. While standard shapes offer technical efficiency, custom shapes provide the organic, biophilic touch that builds deeper human connections. My background in computer science and sociology helps me bridge this gap. Let us look at which choice fits your next project best.

Nature is not perceived the same way across the globe. At Silphium Design, we just released a guide on Cultural Representations of Nature in Digital Media for 2026. Using my background in computer science and sociology, I explore how cultural lenses influence biophilic UX. It is a deep dive into creating inclusive digital spaces that resonate with diverse audiences.

Shapes are more than just aesthetics; they are a language. At Silphium Design, we published a guide on using custom shapes in marketing to engage demographics with biophilic precision. Here, I explore how organic geometry influences human behavior. It is about using nature's patterns to create more resonant connections. Let's make marketing feel more natural and effective.

CW: Self promotion
Trust is the glue of our society, but we’re living through a 30+ year crisis of trust in institutions. As software makers, we aren't just witnesses to this crisis; we are participants in it.
When a number is wrong, trust is lost. And I am sort of fed up of "works on my machine" being applied to number and data outputs by systems. "Number is correct, bug closed". We have to do better.
So I've tried to document that, and also share some more difficult areas like communicating uncertainty in a sensible way.
The lovely people at #Monkigras are letting me share this with a wonderful audience of curious engineers next week (19th-20th March - link https://monkigras.com/ )
Do not worry, there will also be trains. Hopefully yellow ones.

Programming at work -- which once was my favourite thing in the world -- has really been losing its shimmer for me lately.
It's not just the AI stuff -- it's the containers and tests and the CI and transpiling. It's having way more responsibility and deliverables and expectations. It's the legacy of massive projects that were so fun and interesting to build that are now peoples' full time jobs to use.
But this morning I drew a little pink square on a screen using #uxntal and that gave me little butterflies like the first time I figured out I could negative index arrays in python 1000 years ago.

Just started a discussion about HDA (Hypermedia-driven Architecture) in the Open App Ecosystem group on Loomio;
https://www.loomio.com/d/VYPyO17M/building-interactive-websites-in-a-post-framework-web
The OAE group has often been a good place for long term, blue skies discussions about potential futures for ethical tech. Bringing together coding, hosting and UX perspectives. I think this has been useful, and it would be great to get more discussion happening there.

Ever notice how digital spaces can feel more alive depending on the lighting? At Silphium Design, we just published our 2026 insights on Biophilic UX. We are exploring the technical and sociological impact of light on user interaction. It is all about creating intuitive, human-centric experiences in our decentralized world.

I just changed phone, I was happy to fund #fairphone instead of Motorola. Then I spent two days restoring tons of accounts, tokens, and apps, even after transferring my data via cable.
I'm quite sure next time it will be even worse. WTF, this is not acceptable UX. Fuck smartphones and those who create such fuck apps. This is a fucked delirium for the average user. -
@inthehands i just started playing with #filen for my desktop backups. really similar ux to dropbox, e2e encrypted, european corp and servers. i'm trying to get my non-technologist hubby onto it.
(i use syncthing for syncs and borg for server backups)

It feels like there are more coding jobs for web than web and ux+ui design jobs. Is that just my impression? What’s your experience?

I just wanted to share this awesome article dropped this month from datagubbe.se about customized Amiga desktops. As someone who's kind of obsessed with UX and desktop designs, these are a beautiful collection of pixelly goodness:

I just received approval from @plgDavid (Plogue) to publish his #quote. 🤓
See: https://linuxaudio.dev/how-to-help/linux-audio-interviews-quote-library.
Based on other feedback, I’ve updated the new section so the light and dark versions of the quotes now follow the system theme.
This means the dark banners are only shown in #darkmode, and the light banners only in #lightmode.Do you like this approach, or should I switch back to showing both versions all the time?

I eventually managed to log in. Apparently the account lockout was temporary, the dialog just didn't bother to say so and went straight to the "shit's fucked, get help" error message.
My new Windows password hasn't migrated to my Microsoft account (🤔) so now I'm just locked out of Teams. I'm in no rush to fix that.
