  1. For those of you at #MonkiGras last year and appreciated my _we are not very good practicioners_ takes, this is where my head is at re the industry writ large: If we're worried that agent-assisted coding is making things worse, it's because everything else was awful immediately before it. Oh no.

  2. [blog] Monki Gras 2026
#monkigras 2026 was the best Monki Gras so far with a theme of ‘prepping craft’. A room full of techies, and a great gathering of friends, but not really a tech conference. It’s transcended tech, and become the place where the talks are about more important stuff.

  3. I've written up a rough overview of my #monkigras talk on developer learning and AI assisted coding from last week here, will likely be doing it + similar talks again later in the year

  4. Was a delight to speak at #monkigras this week about developer learning and AI assisted coding, will do a fuller write up soon but my deck and related links are here sue.codes/blog/fingerscode/

  5. I’m at #monkigras today! Yesterday set a hug bar with amazing speakers and I’m expecting the same today. First up is Danilo Campos.

  6. Walking to #monkigras and realising I forgot my meds, go me. 🙄

  7. #Monkigras And yes I did forget to explain who I am or what I do! I think that’s ok, every time I think I’ve found a job title that might describe what I do I get a new job and someone asks me yet again to write my own job description after 6 months…

  8. #Monkigras Day 1 done, lovely people, food, as always.

I really want to try to share the messages I had in my talk in a packaged format, so I’ll sort that out.

  9. Very pleased to see events like #monkigras still looking out for disability accommodation and safety, including captioning (language model captioning has gotten MUCH better, and is close to acceptable these days), ventilation, and mandatory COVID testing.

  10. “When I give myself permission to experience my own existence with joy, I give everyone else in the room permission to do the same.”

Wise words from @hazelweakly at #monkigras

  11. The post-lunch @hazelweakly talk is very personal, brilliant, and, I don’t think, could have happened anywhere but #monkigras

  12. “My body remembers” how to code is a fascinating concept from @sue at #monkigras2026 #monkigras

But what if you never get to that stage?

  13. The #monkigras captioning (Breeze Translate) does a brilliant job of correctly handling technical terms and accents! The only thing it’s struggled with is the name of this conference. So far, we’ve seen MonkeyGraha, MonkeyGrawer, Monkey gras (so close!), Monkey graph, and monkey gra. 😁

  14. "Incorrect numbers interrupt the shared reality" more on how numbers need user trust to work from @leymoo #monkigras

  15. Loving this talk about trust and how double entry accounting gave us the tools to trust capitalism and what we might learn about building trust in the modern era from @leymoo #monkigras

  16. Not expecting the presentations at #monkigras

AI has been accepted as a part of the tech stack

The discussions are about measurement and focusing the tools

  17. I’ll be at #monkigras today and tomorrow, and the theme is Prepping Craft. Find me if you’d like some CHAOSS or OpenUK earrings that I designed and 3D printed! 🤩

  18. Delighted to have managed to get myself to #Monkigras this year! I have only done one previous Monkigras event and it was life changing, so who knows what this year will bring!

  19. I’m in Shoreditch London for the next two days attending the #Monkigras conference. I’ve been to Redmonk’s US based events a few times but first time here. Some old friends also attending, should be fun.

Trust is the glue of our society, but we’re living through a 30+ year crisis of trust in institutions. As software makers, we aren't just witnesses to this crisis; we are participants in it.

When a number is wrong, trust is lost. And I am sort of fed up of "works on my machine" being applied to number and data outputs by systems. "Number is correct, bug closed". We have to do better.

So I've tried to document that, and also share some more difficult areas like communicating uncertainty in a sensible way.

The lovely people at #Monkigras are letting me share this with a wonderful audience of curious engineers next week (19th-20th March - link monkigras.com/ )

Do not worry, there will also be trains. Hopefully yellow ones.

  25. On the way home, and already I'm thinking about how you are never prepared.

Preparation is not a state, it is an action.

Preparation is about moving yourself into a state where when the inevitable or the unexpected happens, it is the you that needs to be there for when that happens.

  26. In March this year I gave a talk at #Monkigras about how Free Software didn't understand it had invented a labour organising movement, and the the predictable consequences of that realisation. It wasn't recorded.

    Here's a repeat I gave at #PyConAU this week. ENJOY! youtube.com/watch?v=WsbUzGailCw
