  8. Bolt turned his head, his sharp gray eyes fixing squarely on Remiel in the wooden wheelchair. "But the girl belongs solely to the Department of Justice." Caffrey crumpled the paper in his fist. "She overflew Site Y. No one is even supposed to know there is a Site Y!" And he suddenly fell silent, embarrassed to realize his temper led him to overlook he was speaking loud enough to be overhead by uncleared civilians. "If she has, and it wasn't just a case of getting lost, she will be tried in a Federal District Court," Bolt said without blinking. "Not a military drumhead court-martial. Now order your men to step back from the girl and establish your security cordon around that hull." Caffrey looked from Bolt’s deadpan stare to McTeague’s twelve-gauge, and finally back to Caldwell’s hand on his revolver. The major's shoulders slumped in bitter defeat. "Sergeant," Caffrey spat through gritted teeth. "Post sentries at twenty paces around the aircraft. No one touches the wreckage until the Wright Field team arrives."

  11. As an individual of varied ancestry (½ Japanese & White) raised in US military household, I have a "bloom where you're planted" sort of mentality. In our kitchen growing up, we had a half-joking wooden wreath that read: "Home is where the Air Force sends us."

We were constantly meeting people from different walks of life. All of whom were in the same relative situation. It was not uncommon to uproot and relocate to a new school and work environment. Moving across the nation was normal. All told, I went to 5 high schools in 4 years. As a rule of thumb, if a new family moved in their neighbors would make them a casserole.

As such, it has always perplexed and saddened me when people paint with too broad a brush. Lately, that means backlash against folks who are simply doing their level-best to achieve the American dream of unalienable rights.

    > "Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

Nobody is disputing there are paperwork loopholes to fix in our govt processes. But to assume the worst about anyone simply because of how they look, or where they are from, seems a narrow-minded way of viewing the world.

Maybe because I am of mixed race myself — and implicitly so are my children (my wife is from Europe) — I am pretty chill about the diversity in Frisco, TX and surrounding areas.

Anywho. I do not really have some grand takeaway here. Everyone is human. Treat each other accordingly, I suppose.

😅 Aside: As a soccer dad with a semi-tan complexion and black hair in the DFW area, I occasionally find myself saying…

  16. [Thread] So, back in 2024, the city of #SanfordME cleared out a #HomelessEncampment in a wooded area near an abandoned mill. Since Sanford has NO #HomelessShelters (not even a #WarmingCenter), folks had no choice but to take up shelter in the nearby abandoned mill building. And, of course, there was a fire, though some of it was still standing. Despite repeated sweeps, folks kept coming back to the mill building (though now the city has closed off the street). And Sanford still has NO shelters or options for their #unhoused residents!

'They don't care': Sanford to dismantle homeless camp as residents face uncertain future

by WGME Staff, Mon, June 17, 2024

SANFORD (WGME) -- "Sanford city leaders say a homeless encampment at Heritage Crossing is a health hazard and they plan to dismantle it on Monday.

"But many of the 60 to 80 people living there, in tents and cars, say it's the only home they've got.

"They say the city has done nothing to help them.

" 'Trying to get #housing help is a joke because there is none. Why isn't the city doing something for us? Why do I have to live in my car like this? The city doesn't care. They don't care about any of us. We’re considered bad people, I guess,' said Roberta Doherty, a Sanford native who is living out a car.

"Sanford City Manager Steve Buck says case managers have been offering services and space at local shelters [OUT OF TOWN] to people living here. But he says many campers are unwilling to take them up on their offers.

" 'There is capacity to meet the anticipated needs for rehabilitative and shelter services provided individuals will accept the offer of services. It's not necessarily that there are 30 apartments waiting [BULLSHIT! THEY HAVEN'T EVEN BEEN BUILT], but there's shelter services that is not a tent in the woods,' Buck said.

"Those 30 apartments he's referring to are plans by the Sanford Housing Authority to build a new 30-unit apartment building with support services exclusively for people experiencing homelessness. [STILL WAITING...]"

  19. October 16 is Dictionary Day! Here are some modern words we only have because they are derived from commedia dell'arte!

➤"zany" is from zanni, commedia's foolish male servants, including one named Zanni
➤"scenario" is because commedia actors would pin their brief outline of the play on the back of the stage scenery
➤"slapstick" as a genre of physical comedy comes from the wooden smacking prop used by Arlecchino and other commedia characters
➤"harlequin" is a later evolution of the name Arlecchino
➤"pants" is the short of "pantaloons" which were named after the harlequinade character Pantaloon a descendent of commedia's Pantalone...

... Meaning without commedia dell'arte... we would all be PANTSLESS! 🤣

  20. The past couple of days have been good for random nature shots. I missed a couple of foxes and deer, but you get what you can.
The camouflaged hawk was in my front yard terrorizing the little birds.
The tiny ( 13cm ) grey snake was sunning on a walkway, and the bright green garter snake ( almost 1m ) sadly was dead in the street. On the walk this morning I saw an Eastern Box turtle trying to cross a six lane road with an impossible to cross median. It was half way across the first lane and was missed by several cars. I was able to grab it and move it to the other side of the street in a wooded area. My good deed for the day.
