  1. Pook-Emu Bee: Links For 07-01-26

I have not published "daily" Pook-Emu Bee links since June 23. But today is the start of a new month. Let us turn over a new leaf in July with the Pook-Emu Bee. 1. Nina Totenberg Sincerely Apologizes For An Inexplicable Error (Josh Blackman at The Volokh Conspiracy. June 30, 2026.) Her explanation for falsely reporting that Justice Alito was retiring makes no sense. But then again, even given her partisan impulses (noted by Mr. Blackman in the article), it is hard to figure what the game […]

  8. /2 #MyThoughts

Good. Trump's imposition of the exorbitant fees on certain work visas puts an unfair burden on companies, especially in certain industries (eg., tech & healthcare). And it compromises smaller businesses who will fare worse than larger ones with more means.

Also, it's interesting that the judge called the imposition of those fees on #H1B work visas taxation, effectively making Trump's fees taxation without representation (via Congress).

Do U.S. voters realize the scale and cost of the 47th #POTUS's *drastic* #immigration "slow-walking"?

This backlog is bigger than ALL FOUR YEARS of the 45th POTUS's term.

It's stopped TONS of #science by removing work authorization from LOADS of #scientists who were ALREADY LEGALLY WORKING HERE FOR YEARS (e.g., when graduating Ph.D. #students or #postdocs have to transition to an H-1B #visa when OPT expires).

We had to halt multiple #decisionScience projects when a Research Project Manager completed their doctorate. Why? Because #USCIS simply isn't processing certain #OPT applications — and #H1B processing is much slower than normal times. In the past year, the #UnitedStates multiplied this loss of #innovation and #productivity by HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS! And with no detectable benefit to #security, etc.

Naturally, the highest-skilled foreign nationals are taking their skills to other countries, contributing to further #brainDrain from the #USA.

    Incredible waste and inefficiency.

  21. CW: H-1B US visa question

There is a #Trump proclamation (few months old) that imposes an additional fine ($100k) for applying to a new H1-B visa (the type that is used a lot by researchers).

Does anyone know for sure (with a source please) if this applies to those who are already in the US (for any reason, e.g. you were on a different visa or you are in the grace period of a visa)?

The original proclamation is here and doesn't mention exceptions for already being in the country, just that it doesn't apply to H-1B renewals...
