ANTHONY HOPKINS: Margam-born star tells a tale from hell in first trailer for Guy Ritchie’s Wife & Dog

Sir Anthony Hopkins tells the story of a man who dug his way down to hell in the first trailer for Guy Ritchie’s new thriller, Wife & Dog.

The Margam-born actor, 88, plays the head of the wealthy Fairbank family and narrates the teaser, released by the film’s makers Black Bear last week.

The film is in cinemas on 19 February 2027.

In the trailer, Hopkins tells of a man thrown into a deep pit who, unable to climb out, kept digging down until he found himself in hell.

His daughter, played by Rosamund Pike, asks what the man found there. His answer: “He found me.”

Benedict Cumberbatch plays a man apparently left for dead, and the teaser ends with him taking a bloody revenge.

The cast also includes Cosmo Jarvis, James Norton, Paddy Considine and Pip Torrens.

Guy Ritchie returns to the backstabbing British upper classes

Ritchie wrote and directed the film. The only plot released so far is a one-line synopsis: “The relentless greed of the Fairbank family and their associates fuels betrayal and murder in the battle for succession.”

When Variety reported the casting in 2024, it said the film would take Ritchie back to the backstabbing world of the British upper classes he explored in The Gentlemen.

It caps a busy run for the director, whose recent films include Wrath of Man, The Covenant and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.

At 88, Port Talbot’s most famous son is not slowing down

Wife & Dog is one of several films lined up for Hopkins. Earlier this month he signed to play the villain in sci-fi thriller 2048, as the architect of an authoritarian regime in a ruined future.

He has also finished Eyes In The Trees, a reimagining of H.G. Wells’s The Island of Doctor Moreau, which is in post-production.

In the spring he was back in Wales filming the Dylan Thomas adaptation A Visit to Grandpa’s with Catherine Zeta-Jones.

In August, his first album for Decca Classics, Life Is A Dream, went straight in at number one on the Official Specialist Classical Chart.

The album draws on his childhood in Margam. One piece, Bracken Road, paints the streets, meadows and mountains around his 1940s home.

February is shaping up as a Hopkins month in Swansea as well, with the first stage version of The Silence of the Lambs reaching Swansea Grand Theatre and John Partridge taking on Hannibal Lecter, the role that won Hopkins his first Oscar.
