Her thighs were slick and she still felt hot. At that moment all she wanted to do was ravish Polly where she stood. Unfortunately, that sort of behaviour was disapproved of in a public place.
Polly glanced round quickly, then brushed the back of her hand across Veronica’s cheek. “We can have fun later, Nika.”
She snatched her hand back as someone came through a door.
“Is Mrs Martaci not here?” said Lawrence.
Veronica consulted her watch. “She is late.”
“Then let me escort you, Veronica,” he said. “It is probably a minor delay and we may meet her on the way.” He pressed a button set in a brass, dome-shaped mount on the wall. Veronica heard a bell ring in the distance.

The skirt she could see rushed forward and she was gently pulled her to her feet. “The door’s not locked, miss. And I spoke out of turn.”

“Now that is resolved, I do have another, and I hope better, plan.” She went to a cupboard and dug out the divination cards. She was almost reluctant to touch them after her last painful experience.

“Isn’t that very cynical? Do you not believe in anything then?”
He gave a shrug which was the most natural thing she had ever seen from him. It was so human, so unlike him. “It is not that I don’t believe there is something beyond,” he said, “but I gave up the idea it required worship a long time ago.”

“Dear Polly, remove my shoes and stockings.”
The maid did as she was told and knelt in front of her mistress. She looked up at Veronica, who winked on the side the tutor could not see. Polly suppressed a grin.
“Oh but, mistress, your feet do stink so terrible when you’ve been on them all day.”
“It cannot be helped. They must be exposed.”
Polly made a big show of unbuckling each shoe, and held each one up to her nose. “Oh, it do stink.”
