Indonesië gaat gestaag door met het kappen van oerbos, ondanks de EU-ontbossingsregels die vanaf volgend jaar ingaan. Sterker nog, in Papua is op dit moment het grootste ontbossingsproject ter wereld gaande. In Merauke wordt oerwoud weggehaald zo groot als driekwart de oppervlakte van Nederland, om palmolie- en suikerrietplantages te kunnen aanleggen.
Palmolie is nog altijd massaal aanwezig in de producten in Nederlandse supermarkten.

As of late August 2026, more than 127,031 civilians remain displaced in #WestPapua. For the first time, the Indonesian government publicly acknowledged the crisis, estimating around 122,000 IDPs.
Security operations in Yahukimo's Korowai area caused some 600 indigenous Papuans to flee into forests. A 16-year-old student, Victor Bahabol, died while fleeing. IDPs have received no assistance from national humanitarian organisations. -

Penanganan demonstrasi di Jayapura perlu belajar dari wilayah lain
Wamena, – Ketua Umum Komite Nasional Papua Barat ( KNPB) Pusat, Agus Kossay menyatakan kepolisian di Kota Jayapura dan Kabupaten Jayapura, Provinsi Papua perlu belajar dari tiga kapolres wilayah lain di Tanah Papua, dalam menangani demonstrasi.
Pernyataan itu disampaikan Agus Kossay menyusul sikap polisi yang dinilai represif dan berujung terjadinya ricuh dengan demonstran di Perumnas III Waena, Distrik Heram, Kota Jayapura dan Sentani, Kabupaten Jayapura saat demonstrasi memprotes Perjanjian New York, Sabtu (15/8/2026).
Kossay mengatakan Kapolresta Jayapura Kota dan Kapolres Jayapura perlu belajar dari Kapolres Jayawijaya di Provinsi Papua Pegunungan, Kapolres Nabire dan Kapolres Mimika, Provinsi Papua Tengah dalam menangani demonstrasi.
Katanya, Kapolres di tiga kabupaten itu dapat membangun komunikasi yang baik dengan demonstran, sehingga aksi di tiga wilayah pada hari yang sama berlangsung aman dan tertib.
Ketiga Kapolres disebut memberikan ruang demokrasi sebebas-bebasnya kepada rakyat Papua untuk menyampaikan aspirasinya, secara damai dan bermartabat.
“Saya mengapresiasi Kapolres Jayawijaya, Nabire dan Timika bersama jajarannya. Mereka ini yang benar-benar belajar hukum dan demokrasi, sehingga kemarin tanggal 15 [Agustus 2026] itu Kapolres Jayawijaya dan Kapolres Nabire dan Kapolres Mimila memberikan ruang demokrasi sebebas-bebasnya kepada rakyat Papua menyampaikan berpendapat di muka umum,” kata Agus Kossay, Minggu (16/8/2026).
Kossay pun mengacam sikap polisi di Kota Jayapura dan Kabupaten Jayapura dalam menangangi demonstrasi, yang dianggap represif terhadap demonstran yang terdiri dari para aktivis KNPB dan mahasiswa.
“Saya mau sampaikan kepada kepolisian yang bertugas di Kota Jayapura dan Kabupaten Jayapura bahwa tindakan represif adalah tindakan tidak terpuji. [Mereka] wajib belajar dari [kepolisian di] kabupaten tetangga,” ucapnya.
Katanya, sikap yang ditunjukkan kepolisian di Kota Jayapura dan Kabupaten Jayapura merupakan bentuk pembungkaman ruang demokrasi bagi rakyat Papua di wilayah itu.
Cara seperti itu lanjut Kossay, tidak akan menyelesaikan akar konflik politik di Tanah Papua. Menurutnya, negera melalui aparat keamanan mestinya dapat membangun komunikasi yang baik melalui pendekatan persuasif dan humanis.
Kossay berharap, Kapolda Papua mengevaluasi anggota kepolisian yang melakukan pembatasan ruang demokrasi. Sebab mereka dinilai tidak memahami tentang demokrasi dan nilai kemanusiaan sebagai landasan hukum Indonesia. (*)

On 3.8.26, Indonesian police blocked and dispersed peaceful demonstrations across Sentani, Jayapura Regency, held under the theme "Papua: a Military and Humanitarian Emergency Zone." The protests were part of simultaneous actions across #WestPapua.
33 protesters were injured and two detained. Despite the peaceful nature, approx 1,000 joint TNI-police personnel were deployed.
