Tidepool, Point Lobos
The underverse,
below a silvered surface,
push and pull of tides,
drone views of Manhattan at four am,
Purple seastars sprawled across
ridged blocks of mussels, coal-black valves
open in rhythm like intersections, inhaling
each new scudding plate of plankton. Green-stalked anemones
pulse then pause. Crabs leap and land en pointe, red taxicabs
searching fares, lazy snails, naive fish. Gunnels mimic sour-apple
stick candy, sculpins stout as new condos, kelpfish are striped russet scarves
swaying like dandies. A snowy egret stalks nearby, as I pull off mask and snorkel only to slide into the foggy blanket of July.~~
