Day 13:
VideoLAN Client, a.k.a. VLC
Some distro maintainers apparently hate it. It is very customizable, which results in multiple and frequent UI changes.
But damn is it useful! I MUST have it.
I have found very few video formats that VLC won't play, at least if you install all the codecs (some of which are non-free, which is why you have to install them later -- but that's not VLC's fault).
It is my usual music player, and video player. I use it to check my newly-edited videos.
Somewhere in there is a way to edit metadata in files -- I know I've used it, though not in a long time.
And if I go to "Media -> Convert/Save", it can convert video formats, which can be a life-saver.
If my computer should shut down suddenly, my screenlogging script will produce a corrupted video. VLC can read it and convert into a corrected format that other programs can read. Handy!

It lacks some basic video player controls — no ⬅️➡️ arrow skipping, and you can’t click (left or right) to pause or resume playback.
Also, the fullscreen button sits awkwardly apart from the rest of the controls. Small things, but they really affect usability 👀 -

¡YouTube se renueva! Nuevo diseño del reproductor de video
YouTube está desplegando un rediseño de su reproductor de video en todas las plataformas, incluyendo Android, iOS, web y televisores, buscando una experiencia más limpia, inmersiva e intuitiva. El objetivo principal es oscurecer menos contenido y hacer la interfaz más expresiva. Además del reproductor, se actualizan las animaciones al «dar like» y la gestión de listas de reproducción (Fuente Blog Youtube).
La actualización del reproductor de video de YouTube es un esfuerzo por unificar y modernizar la experiencia del usuario, haciéndola «más vibrante y dinámica». El cambio más notable en televisores es la reubicación de los detalles del video a la esquina superior izquierda, mientras que todos los demás controles se agrupan debajo de la barra de progreso. Ahora, botones como «Me gusta», «No me gusta», «Comentarios» y «Guardar» se encuentran agrupados en un formato de píldora para un acceso más limpio.
En dispositivos móviles (en modo horizontal), la mayoría de los controles también se agrupan en un píldora en el lado izquierdo. Además de los cambios en el diseño, la plataforma introduce nuevas funcionalidades interactivas:
- Animaciones Dinámicas al «Dar Me Gusta»: Al presionar el botón de «Me gusta» en ciertos videos, se activará un tratamiento visual dinámico y personalizado basado en el contenido. Por ejemplo, un video musical mostrará una nota musical animada, mientras que un video deportivo podría tener una referencia visual del juego.
- Guardado Moderno de Videos: El proceso de guardar videos en «Ver más tarde» o añadirlos a listas de reproducción es ahora más fluido y visual.
- Doble Toque para Buscar (Seek): Se ha modernizado la animación al usar el doble toque para avanzar o retroceder el video, haciéndola menos intrusiva.
- Hilos de Comentarios (Threading): Se implementa un sistema estructurado para las respuestas en los comentarios, buscando una experiencia de lectura más enfocada.
Estos cambios, que están siendo desplegados globalmente a partir de esta semana, buscan mejorar la navegabilidad y hacer que la interacción con la plataforma sea más entretenida y atractiva.
