Last day of (virtual) #Woodyfest and it has been a good one.
Highlights thus far have been Crys Matthews (who I adore for her protest songs and the way she get everyone singing along, what folk music is all about) and Agalisiga Mackey Music, the latter singing the most beautiful chilled out old-timey country songs in the #CherokeeLanguage.

My neighbors got their #CherokeeNation Tribal IDs updated at an outreach event in Chicago yesterday. They also got to meet Principal Chief Chuck Hoskins.
Outreach like this is great, I wish more Native Nations would do it in Chicago.

Question for anyone who is fluent in the #Cherokee (aka #TsaLaGi) language:
I'm looking for the words for Jew, Jewish, and Judaism. I've struck out with all of the standard dictionaries and lexicons, so instead I turned to the Cherokee New Testament (translated more than 100 years ago, so it has many words that aren't listed in dictionaries, and looked at some of the verses that use the word "Jew," in the hopes of figuring out which word is the right word.
I think I may have found it, but would appreciate if any Cherokee fluent folks could confirm this for me.
So anyway I think the word in Cherokee syllabary is: "ᎠᏧᏏ" but in phoenetics, it would be: "A-tsu-si"

On a side note (and in the tiny hope that there might be some #Tsalagi speakers on the fediverse), I'm trying to figure out what the Cherokee word for Jew or Jewish, and what that word might literally mean (a lot of Cherokee words are descriptions rather than names).
I checked several of the online dictionaries without luck, so my next place to look was the Cherokee New Testament (ironically enough), as I knew the word Jew or Jews would be in that text.
From what I can tell, I think the word is: ᎤᎾᏤᎵᎦ (pronounced: u-na-tse-li-ga), but I'm not certain about this. so I would love to hear from any Tsalagi fluent folks about this.

Second fun fact: precisely because he never learned how to read beforehand, and also because the phonetics of his language are syllable-focused like Japanese, Sequoyah lifted several #Cherokee / #Tsalagi glyphs directly from the Latin alphabet, but in such a way that their phonetics do not match their Latin counterparts. That can be expected, but to not have a single match after dozens of instances, out of casuality, is statistically impressive. For instance:
- Ꭰ makes an "a" sound, while Ꮄ sounds like "le"
- Ꭱ makes an "e" sound, while Ꮢ sounds like "sv", where the "v" sounds like the "a" in "about"
- Ꭲ makes an "i" sound
- Ꭴ is so close, but it makes an "u" sound, and Ꮻ sounds like "wi"
- Ꭵ sounds like "v" (see above)
- Ꭹ sounds like "gi", while Ꮍ sounds like "mu"
- Ꭺ sounds like "go", while Ꭿ sounds like "hi"
- Ꭻ sounds like "gu"
- Ꭼ sounds like "gv", while Ꮛ sounds like "quv"
- Ꮁ sounds like "hu" despite of looking like the Cyrillic "g"
- Ꮃ sounds like "la", while Ꮤ sounds like "ta"

I see this in my own direct ancestry. My ggrandmothers side of my Native family is full blood, but my ggrandfather's side is mixed. This is a great video that demonstrates how different Native matrilineal societies can be.
There are differences among Native Nations but Tsalagi (Cherokee) very similar to Mvskoke. Mvskoke/Tsalagi are both of so called 5 Civilized Tribes. Ancestral & Removal lands are next to each other.
