Last day of (virtual) #Woodyfest and it has been a good one.
Highlights thus far have been Crys Matthews (who I adore for her protest songs and the way she get everyone singing along, what folk music is all about) and Agalisiga Mackey Music, the latter singing the most beautiful chilled out old-timey country songs in the #CherokeeLanguage.

I just finished the last class of Cherokee 3 (still need to take the final). Class was a retake for me. I passed the first time but I thought a refresher would be nice before taking Cherokee 4 in the fall. I've signed up for an intensive short course on verbs next. #cherokeelanguage

The wind this morning is intense. I kind of love hearing it howl and whistle. I wonder if it's like this all over Rochester or just where I am so close to Lake Ontario.

I keep finding little ᏣᎳᎩ notes as I unpack things in the studio. Still excited when I remember a word. This is the word for panther, or mountain lion. 🤎

I decided to trust myself. I’ve signed up to retake Cherokee 3 and then move forward with level 4. I don’t want to waste any time learning from Ed Fields. Elders aren’t here forever. 🫶🏼
So now I’m reviewing my notes from levels 1 and 2. I am retaining things. I just need to start using it more every day.

My current bird obsession…
Long-tailed Ducks 🤍ᎧᏬᏄ - kawonu - duck
Currently researching how to say long-tailed in Cherokee. It’s likely some combination of ganvhida (long) and gadoga (tail). We have digalenvhida meaning long-eared. Ear is galeni.

This year had a lot of heartbreak and grief but there were joys too. I’m going to share a joy a day leading up to the New Year 🫶🏼
Joy 1 - ᎤᎵᎮᎵᏍᏗ ᏌᏊ - One of my best friends bought me this pendant after I passed Cherokee 1, 2, and 3 in 2024. #CherokeeLanguage

I went on a winter hike to explore and was lucky to see a group of Cedar Waxwings huddled in a tree.
