I remember a conversation with a friend of mine about the evolution of PCs some years ago, and how we jokingly mentioned that soon CPUs would have more internal cache memory than whole desktop PCs had system RAM back in the day. Well, AMD latest addition to its Threadripper HEDT line can be called an overachiever, because it matches not only one of my old setups, but three at the same time!

  23. @stfn yeah, apart from my server. As a software developer myself I'm looking into a threadripper system as a workstation pc. It has a huge price tag indeed, and the previous threadripper socket was already abandoned. So don't expect the same long term support for their sockets like their ryzen sockets.

    If you want cheap CPUs within a server environment look at Intel Xeon systems. Especially those refurbished Xeons are a steal.

    -> 496W*0.84 = 416W after power supply

    416W - 200W RTX470 - 180W TR = 36W for all other components on the board
