  1. Most CXL coverage collapses three separate things into one, which is why the technology reads as both imminent and permanently delayed.

    Expansion gives a single host extra CXL-attached memory as a second tier. It is in production at hyperscale — 768 GB of local DDR5-6400 alongside 256 GB of reclaimed DDR4-2400 per node, at 0.13 the cost per gigabyte of local DRAM, because those DIMMs were already bought.

    Pooling gives several hosts exclusive slices of a shared device, and does not require a switch: a multi-port device pools across whatever hosts plug into it. NSDI '26 measurements put multi-port paths at 260–300 ns against 490–600 ns switched.

    Sharing — many hosts on one region, coherent in hardware — is defined in CXL 3.0 and absent from shipping devices.

    The economics are the open question. Google researchers put switched break-even around 24 nodes. The same NSDI work finds sparse multi-port topologies save 3% to 5.4%. Topology decides.

    Got a new CPU, motherboard, and RAM from MicroCenter in an in-store deal at the time (their combo deals are insane even today) whereby I was given 32GB of DDR5-6000 DRAM for 1 penny. (Its list price in the store was $149.99.)

    I just did a NewEgg search for the same DRAM kit and found it at $933.99.

  12. Memory earnings season opened with numbers that would have been typos three years ago: $61 billion in quarterly operating profit at Samsung, $41.5 billion in revenue at Micron against $9.3 billion a year earlier. Q3 contract talks point to DRAM rising another 13–30%, NAND 10–40%.

    The more interesting shift is the forecast horizon. On the day of its $26.5 billion Nasdaq debut — the largest ever US listing by a foreign company — SK hynix called 2027 the worst supply year in the industry's history and said demand will outrun capacity beyond 2030. Customers reportedly asked for five to six times as much supply; some offered to buy the fab equipment outright. Meanwhile, wafer allocation keeps tilting toward HBM, leaving standard DDR4/DDR5 undersupplied and pushing buyers into the secondary market.

  13. It's insane to me that 3 companies are basically singlehandedly choking out the entire world's RAM and SSD supply to deliver hardware paid for with nonexistent money to unprofitable companies that provide almost universally a net negative service to society.

    And the fact that the stars aligned to get all major tech companies to approve of this ("AI" because they want hype and investment, video game and streaming because they want everything in the cloud, the actual manufacturers because companies are stabled business partners) while 99% of consumers are against it just shows how dead capitalism is at this stage.

    What's made is pre-sold. Multi-year deals (Micron–Anthropic, plus Samsung and SK Hynix) lock volume off the open market.

    For IT teams retiring hardware, the DDR4 and DDR5 in decommissioned servers doesn't wait for a 2027 fab or sit behind a contract. It's available now, and one of the few sources of conventional DRAM many buyers can get.

    If your DDR5 DIMM modules have configurable RGB, then every time you reprogram the colours or pattern there is a non-zero chance to corrupt the SPD or other configuration information on the module.

    This renders the module unable to train, even if the RAM itself is functional.

    Maybe DIMM modules without RGB are the way to go? 🖖🤷‍♂️
