Dear friends, USB 3.2 over optical #10GbE!

All this talk how SFP standard makes network equipment medium-agnostic, yet the network interface itself has a notion of supported link modes and it doesn't list the one I planned to use (10000baseLR/Full). Still waiting for cables delivery, so can't test, I don't know what to make of it but this is upsetting.
This is Mellanox ConnectX-3 Pro and by that maker's software tools it makes sense that they are part of Nvidia now.

#Realtek's $10 tiny #10GbE network adapter is coming to motherboards later this year
The Realtek #RTL8127 is a tiny — measuring 9mm x 9mm — network controller with a PCIe 4.0 x2 interface that supports a wide range of Ethernet speeds, including 2.5 Gbps, 5 Gbps, and 10 Gbps. The RTL8127 controller consumes about 1.95W and supports modern standby modes, which is critical for laptops.

This Alder Lake-N mini PC has two 10 GbE and two 2.5 GbE LAN ports
The Topton X4H-XL is a compact computer with support for up to an Intel Core i3-N305 Alder Lake-N processor, up to 32GB of RAM, and up to three storage devices.
But what really sets it apart from most mini PCs is that this system is made for networking. It has two 10 GbE SFP+ optical ports and two 2.5 GbE Ethernet ports, allowing you to use the system as a high-speed networking device for use as a firewall, file server, or for other applications. The Topton X4H-XL is available now from AliExpress for $204 and up.
The starting price is for a barebones model with an Intel N100 quad-core processor and no memory or storage, but you can also pay more for an Intel Core i3-N305 octa-core processor and up to 32GB of RAM and a 1TB PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD.
The computer measures 178.3 x 126.5 x 55mm (7″ x 5″ x 2.2″) and features an aluminum alloy body with fins on the top to aid with passive heat dissipation, but there’s also support for an optional internal fan.
Inside the case there’s a single SODIMM slot with support for single-channel DDR5-4800 memory, an M.2 2280 slots for PCIe 3.0 SSDs, a SATA slot for a 2.5 inch hard drive or SSD, and an M.2 2230 E-Key slot that can be used for a wireless card, but which can also be used with an adapter board to add another SSD. There’s also a microSD card reader for removable storage.
Ports include:
- 2 x 10 GbE SFP+ optical LAN (Intel 82599ES)
- 2 x 2.5 GbE Ethernet (Intel i226-V)
- 2 x HDMI 2.0
- 1 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C
- 1 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A
- 4 x USB 2.0 Type-A

Because the budget was already gone 😅
Added 10Gb networking to a DeskPi Super4C Raspberry Pi cluster with 2.5Gb ports.
Perfectly unnecessary. Zero regrets. -
Patrick from ServeTheHome with an update on some developments at the low end of the 10-gigabit Ethernet ecosystem:
* a new low(er) power Realtek chip which consumes 2-3 watts and only requires PCIe gen4 x1
* a couple small fanless #10GbE switches for $300 or less

@fwaggle not a serious decision, just the first day of #10GbE between these two computers. I am used to being able to specify IP/hostname to force certain routes, so I'm going to reconfigure this. The tricky bit is to make #Wireguard on laptop (one of computers in this story) pick the fastest route as I roam (unplug, use wifi, leave home, come back).

I have two computers connected to router with 1Gbit ethernet (eth1).
I connect the two computers directly with 10Gbit ethernet on second interfaces (eth2).
I add both interfaces into bridge interfaces on both computers (br0).
There's no "metric" shown on eth1, eth2, just one on br0.
The bridge seems to "know" the faster path and routes stuff optimally.
But how does it know it? ARP?
