Analyzing a Malicious Compiled HTML Help File Delivering Agent Tesla

This analysis examines an attack chain utilizing malicious compiled HTML help (.chm) files for initial payload delivery. The attack begins with a 7zip compressed file containing a weaponized CHM file that displays a decoy window while executing obfuscated JavaScript code. This JavaScript launches PowerShell commands that verify internet connectivity by pinging Google, then downloads additional PowerShell code disguised as a JPEG file. The second stage decompresses and loads multiple byte arrays in memory, including a loader DLL and compressed Agent Tesla payload. The final Agent Tesla sample executes through process injection into RegAsm.exe and uses FTP protocol to exfiltrate stolen data including keystrokes, screenshots, and camera recordings to attacker-controlled infrastructure at ftp.videoalliance[.]ru.

#Peazip sigue mejorando. Es un señor programón para trabajar con archivos comprimidos y cifrados. Si seguís usando #WinRAR notaréis mucha diferencia. Si ya veníais de usar #7zip quizá no notéis inmediatamente muchas funciones adicionales (que las hay) pero sí una mayor facilidad de uso e interfaz más agradable.

To be clear this is a security flaw that WinRAR patched in July last year.

Why is it a problem now? Because WinRAR, like 7-Zip does not provide autoupdate. 😢

I actually made a bot to start tracking these releases @archivetoolstracker at the start of the year (it has yet to post because neither have updated yet in 2026).

If you use either of these follow it or its RSS feed so that you know when to update.

I made a small thing. Just a little automated masto account @archivetoolstracker to track updates to 7-Zip and RAR (WinRAR).

Why!? 🤔 These types of archiving tools are very handy but have been known to have security issues (both had exploits last year). Plus they don't always provide automatic update mechanisms on most platforms. 😉

It should be a very low volume of posts (maybe 5 a year? 🤷). Follow and click 🔔 for an actual notification. Or just follow via RSS. 😉

Sometimes it is handy to use archive formats that do not confuse our windows friends. Or perhaps you want a quick listing, or to update files without reading and writing the entire thing (i.e. non-solid archives).

Zip or 7z and friends can be handy. The problem is that with their Windows hertitage they do not always (reliably) retain certain UNIX metadata. Here is are some very simple workarounds via the find command.

UPDATE: added support for zip-compatible symlinks. enz works exactly like zip by default storing linked files, using the -y switch to store links only.

🧩 3️⃣ Vulnerabilidad crítica en 7-Zip: hackers la están explotando ahora.

Una falla grave en el popular programa de compresión 7-Zip (CVE-2025-11001) permite a atacantes ejecutar código de forma remota cuando un usuario descomprime un archivo ZIP malicioso.

El problema radica en cómo 7-Zip maneja enlaces simbólicos (symlinks): un ZIP confeccionado puede hacer que el programa acceda a carpetas no deseadas y ejecute código con permisos elevados.

La vulnerabilidad afecta a todas las versiones anteriores a la 25.00 (es decir, versiones usadas desde 21.02 hasta 24.09).

Ya existe un exploit de prueba de concepto (PoC) público, lo que facilita que delincuentes lo usen en ataques reales.

Aunque 7-Zip lanzó el parche en julio de 2025, muchos sistemas siguen sin actualizarlo: la recomendación urgente es que actualices a la versión 25.00 o superior lo antes posible.
