  1. Book Review: The Theatres of Boston: A Stage and Screen History by Donald C. King

    Author: Donald C. King
Title: The Theatres of Boston: A Stage and Screen History
    Publication Info: Jefferson, N.C. : McFarland & Co., c2005.
    Summary/Review:

The Theatres of Boston is a history of Boston’s playhouses, vaudeville, burlesque, and movie theaters from Colonial times to the 21st century.  It’s full of fascinating tidbits about theater architecture, performances, and hidden quirks.  Unfortunately, this book is poorly written, sticking to a strict chronological sequence where histories of different theaters are mixed up sometimes within the same paragraph.  It might have made more sense if it was just a bulleted-point list.  Even better would be a book with a chapter on each theater that compiles its architectural details, modifications and name changes, and notable performances, but that is not the book this is.

    Rating: **

  6. Sak's done it again! His updated interface to blplaybills.org is more mobile/tablet-friendly, and the different search options are clearer, plus his earlier OCR improvements. And checked that structured info for individual playbills!

  8. October 8th, 1900: "Ben-Hur" came to #philadelphia

The Chestnut Street Opera House hosted the tour of the biggest and most successful Broadway show of the era, starring the handsome star William Farnum.

The show was an adaptation of the 1880 novel "Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ" by Gen. Lew Wallace. It boasted a cast of 350 people.

The role of Jesus Christ was by a a 25,000 candle-power beam of light.

  10. Have you checked out Sak Supple's blplaybills.org/ lately? He's been experimenting with semantic search, and improving OCR for British Library playbills.

    A big boon for #TheaterHistory / #TheatreHistory!

Please let him or us know if you have feedback or ideas

Lamb's career, in which he failed in his ambition to be a tragic actor but became known for his "low comedy" roles, is a tragedy in itself.

  13. It’s not that we dislike Will Shakespeare, it’s that he gets plenty of stage time. His contemporaries don’t, and some of them are 🔥🔥🔥

  14. Did you miss it? Sak Supple has made his blplaybills.org/ site available again - search the OCR of about 80,000 theatrical English, Scottish, and Irish playbills between 1600 and 1902 (mostly 19th century)

Spread the word, #TheatreHistory #TheaterHistory folks!

  15. This wildly ambitious project to consider for performance every single British play text from the earliest to 1642 (except the ones by that guy from Stratford) is not supported by any research body or cultural institution. It’s all done by volunteers, and supported by patrons. We’ve found some real gems, and we have the skills to stage entire seasons of them. 21. It’s been a while since I mentioned that I’m part of a group that reads plays online. We are working our way through every British performance text written before 1642 (except the ones by that balding guy with the goatee). 27. It's an honor to join the advisory board for "Early Theatre"--a journal that has played a formative and important (and, frankly, enjoyable) role in my development as a scholar of early modern theater history. I'm especially excited to be joining the board as part of such an intellectually strong, diverse, and vibrant group of colleagues. #theaterhistory #theatre #earlymoderndrama #humanities #academic #theatrehistory #histodons #drama earlytheatre.org/earlytheatre/

  28. Sad news: the wonderful Ron Dennis, the original Richie in A Chorus Line, has passed away. I met him only once, very briefly when I lived in L.A. in the mid-90s, and I couldn’t help but gush. 29. Hi everyone! 👋

This is my #introduction in this new space:

I’m an early modernist and associate professor of English. I edit book reviews for Shakespeare Bulletin and editions of poems and plays by 17th c. women.

My first book, “The Elizabethan Country House Entertainment,” analyzes the most important kind of pageantry in 16th-century England. My current book, “Remaking Shakespeare’s Masques,” investigates how directors and editors have remade masques in Shakespeare’s plays to reveal shifting views of identity at different historical moments.

I’m researching women patrons of drama for a future project. And I love sharing ideas for teaching and learning new ones from you.

Look for "Destroying Things on the Early Modern Stage" soon in "Early Modern Literary Studies" and read all about how (and why) the early modern theater broke, ripped, burned, smashed, tore, and ate things up. #earlymoderndrama #theater #performancestudies #theaterhistory #Shakespeare #theaterprops #theatercostumes

  36. I spent so much of the morning on mastodon, I barely had time to annotate my script. Today on Beyond Shakespeare (the collaborative project to read aloud - and consider for performance - every English play William Shakespeare *did not* write up to 1642) we are reading Midas by John Lyly, a writer we have greatly enjoyed. #EarlyModern #Drama #ReadingAloud #theatre #TheatreHistory #RenaissanceDrama #mythology #theater #TheaterHistory
