  1. Charle’s Portis is known for ‘True Grit’, but for me it pales to the rest of his works.

Sit for a spell and I shall tell you of the his book, the Master’s of Atlantis. I shan’t spoil it.

A young G.I. is in Europe waiting for a boat back to the U.S., he meets a man who eventually claims to be part of a mystical ancient order. The G.I. is gullible and falls for the ploy, while us the reader is well aware it is a con.

Well let’s just say he goes back to America, takes it rather seriously, and ends up starting his own very well-natured, well, cult. It’s got schisms and schemes and a happy ending.

And I think I love the work of Charles Portis because similar to Kurt Vonnegut, he illustrates loneliness in a tender and vulnerable way.

Also: There is an elaborate B-plot featuring a young con-man wanna-be who starts a venture in the Colorado mountains to grow fast growing weeds in the soil to grind down to recover gold.

Also I didn’t know Conan O’Brien had kind things to read about it, but I can see how he would like it too.

  2. An excerpt from God Bless You Mr. Rosewater. A reminder of what we’ve known all along:

‘Thus did a handful of rapacious citizens come to control all that was worth controlling in America. Thus was the savage and stupid and entirely inappropriate and unnecessary and humorless American class system created. Honest, industrious, peaceful citizens were classed as bloodsuckers, if they asked to be paid a living wage. And they saw that praise was reserved henceforth for those who devised means of getting paid enormously for committing crimes against which no laws had been passed. Thus the American dream turned belly up, turned green, bobbed to the scummy surface of cupidity unlimited, filled with gas, went bang in the noonday sun.’ God Bless you Mr. Rosewater - Kurt Vonnegut

  3. Kurt Vonnegut attended the University of Chicago on the G.I. Bill and took summer classes in order to keep lodging.

In his collection of essays on Palm Sunday, he informs the reader on how he ended up studying anthropology.

“I chose cultural anthropology, since it offered the greatest opportunity to write high-minded balderdash.” ― Kurt Vonnegut, Palm Sunday: An Autobiographical Collage

  4. Sirens of Titan holds a real special place in my heart. It influenced me in my teen years and gave me something to hold onto. These quotes help illustrate why:

“I was a victim of a series of accidents, as are we all.”

    &

“A purpose of human life, no matter who is controlling it, is to love whoever is around to be loved.” ― Kurt Vonnegut, The Sirens of Titan

  5. Kurt Vonnegut received his Master’s Degree in Anthropology. The University of Chicago considered his work ‘Cat’s Cradle’ to be a sufficient thesis.

He has a quote for me from Sirens of Titan that I think sums up anthropology well:

“There is room enough for an awful lot of people to be right about things and still not agree.” ― Kurt Vonnegut, The Sirens of Titan

  6. CW: plot points of kurt vonnegut sirens of titan

The Sirens of Titan is a journey from Earth, Mars, Mercury, Earth and finally Titan.

On Mercury, Boaz, the companion of the main protagonist Unk becomes totally at peace and decides to stay. Boaz say’s the following:

“I found me a place where I can do good without doing any harm, and I can see I’m doing good, and them I’m doing good for know I’m doing it, and they love me, Unk, as best they can. I found me a home.” ― Kurt Vonnegut, The Sirens of Titan

He becomes a caretaker figure for a local species of film like sheets which glow when exposed to frequencies. They cling to the rock walls of the caves of Mercury and feed on the vibrations. They love Boaz because they can lay on his body and enjoy him just being himself.

He finds a home where he can only do good without doing any harm.

  7. In the Kurt Vonnegut novel ‘Slapstick’, a failing US Gov’t eeks out a policy in its last days that everyone is to be assigned a middle name and a number.

All the middle names are based on words from the natural world. So you may be a Peanut-11 or a Squirrel-7 or Aluminium-4

Clubs pop up, people start connecting. Some folks are snooty with fancy names, some have humble names that fit them perfectly.

The idea is to give everyone a family. If you’re on hard times, you find some kin of your folk where you happen to be.

It is one of his most humane books but buried in one of his lesser read books.

  8. A question for any 19th century English lit scholars (please do boost!): when were Lord Byron's letters to his wife first published? I haven't been able to find a specific date for those yet. (I'm assuming it must have been after her death in 1860, but I could be wrong even about that vague assumption...)

  9. Isaac Asimov bravely takes on the daunting challenge of explaining to an English Lit major why they're hilariously wrong about science 🤓✍️. Spoiler: crumpled handwritten letters are just the best way to convey cutting-edge scientific insights! 📜✨

  16. Seeing lots of anxiety about students using bots to write essays. If this is any indication, though, I think I'll be able to detect it. A key giveaway would be an essay about the characters Man Pedro, Man John, and Character in that great drama play "More Ado About Nothing"... #grading #Shakespeare #bots #essays #plagiarism #EnglishLit

  18. Hello fediverse!
    Here's a proper self #introduction!

I'm an #academic based in #Bengaluru now and I teach #EnglishLit at college level. I love words: so writing, editing, translating, and reading are all areas of interest. I've submitted my #PhD thesis in contemporary British drama and am awaiting public defense. I'm #Tamil and #ace.

I have strong feelings but low energy, so I'd rather doomscroll than engage with "unpopular opinions."
