  5. The play only ran for 9 days in August 1624 - the political stuff, despite being disguised with the (arguably racist) chess allegory, was too volatile, and the censors intervened. There’s also extreme and sexual violence, but that’s normal for Jacobean drama.
The company is also doing a live performance I can’t be part of, but when the YouTube material is released I’ll post a link. #EarlyModern #EarlyModernDrama #Middleton #ThomasMiddleton social.coop/@CommonMugwort/112

  8. It’s not that we dislike Will Shakespeare, it’s that he gets plenty of stage time. His contemporaries don’t, and some of them are 🔥🔥🔥

  11. This wildly ambitious project to consider for performance every single British play text from the earliest to 1642 (except the ones by that guy from Stratford) is not supported by any research body or cultural institution. It’s all done by volunteers, and supported by patrons. We’ve found some real gems, and we have the skills to stage entire seasons of them. 13. I'm excited to share that Will Tosh and I are seeking article abstracts for a proposed special issue of "Shakespeare Bulletin" on the subject of #teaching #Shakespeare and #earlymoderndrama in and/or through #performance. Please see the #CFP for more information, and please do share with your colleagues and students.

  14. Thrilled to get the first part of this incredibly important collected works and honored to be a contributor to some of the forthcoming volumes! #earlymoderndrama #thomasheywood #histodons #literature #editing

  15. "For there it is, crackt in an hundred shivers..." My article "Destroying Things on the Early Modern English Stage" is now available in the journal Early Modern Literary Studies. This is part of a (long-delayed) project on theatrical failure in early modern England. #shakespeare #earlymoderndrama #theaterhistory #theater #theaterprops #performancestudies #theatercostume #theatricalfailure journals.shu.ac.uk/index.php/E

  16. It's an honor to join the advisory board for "Early Theatre"--a journal that has played a formative and important (and, frankly, enjoyable) role in my development as a scholar of early modern theater history. I'm especially excited to be joining the board as part of such an intellectually strong, diverse, and vibrant group of colleagues. #theaterhistory #theatre #earlymoderndrama #humanities #academic #theatrehistory #histodons #drama earlytheatre.org/earlytheatre/

  17. Proofsday! Look for "Destroying Things on the Early Modern Stage" soon in "Early Modern Literary Studies" and read all about how (and why) the early modern theater broke, ripped, burned, smashed, tore, and ate things up. #earlymoderndrama #theater #performancestudies #theaterhistory #Shakespeare #theaterprops #theatercostumes
