Angefangen hat es, als meine Frau sich über eine viel zu hohe #Rechnung für ihr Handy beschwert hat. Ein Blick auf die Rechnung und der Begriff Premium-SMS sticht hervor.
Mit einem Login beim Telcom Anbieter können im Web die Rechnung und vor allem die Rechnungsdetails angeschaut werden. Da sticht ein Premium-SMS für CHF 15.- (!) von der Nummer #595 von #Paycon hervor.

Company that can get away with it tells everyone they need to raise prices.
Not bc costs have gone up, it's because they no competitors to challenge them &/or gov't hasn't regulated properly as public services.
Groceries, housing, transportation, telcom, post-sec educ, childcare...

Almost seems like the cellcos *really* don't like the idea of unlicensed spectrum that anyone can just flow data through. After all, that's *their* job.

Fell down a Wikipedia rabbithole and boy, does this chart make me feel like I've Seen Some Shit, because I remember all of those transitions. (Mostly I remember having to replace my phone waaay more often than I ever wanted to. And so many model-specific phone chargers.)
But that Motorola Razr did feel like the future.

Though I guess they aren't using the uplink/downlink channelization that's listed on that page for CDMA2000 Band 5? It says 410-483 up, 420-493 down, 10MHz spacing. (Or maybe the channels are in there, just hard to identify on the scope.)
Though I do still wonder why it starts at 418ish and not at 420.000 even? Would have left space for a nice 10MHz channel in the band.

Any #HamRadio, #telcom or other RF-interested folks want to take a guess as to what this signal might be? I can't figure it out.
Starts at 418.360MHz and is about 13.5MHz wide (ends around 431.880MHz), with a soft peak around 428 where it's about 11dB above the noise floor using an indoor 24" whip.
It's too low for LTE Band 31/72/73 or the 450MHz stuff. Super clean edges.
FCC freq DB just says "CDMA 5,450 UPLINK" from 410-446.5 with no other explanation.

I’m no expert on #telcom hardware, but I find it hard to believe that modern phone switches couldn’t automatically infer the area code if someone dials only 7 digits instead of the full 10. Why make *everyone* do 10-dig dialing all the time? Just assume the dest area code is the same as the origin’s if it’s not included.
This seems like a limitation that should have expired with mechanical switching.
