community. She remains a source of #protectionforwomen, a confidante and has
counseled many through #grief and #despair. Everyone knows you “go to Stephanie’s”
when all other service providers turn you away. Her spot was a #culturalhub, a
#safeguard, a space that cultivated #community in the truest sense.
In #February #2023, #BlackHistoryMonth, her extraordinary support and giving meant
nothing to the #LAPD, #DepartmentofSanitation and other state actors that destroyed
everything. She was told that some items would be saved such as her cultural
performance #stage, but moments later, as if to further #taunt, her stage was snatched
up and crushed before our eyes.
It was a #coldmorning and #Stephanie pleaded and asked for her #blanket, she was
promised she would be able to retrieve it, yet, again, we witnessed it being trashed with
the rest of her belongings.
Nothing was spared. In front of people living in one of the most food and water insecure
areas in the country, who struggle daily to eat - non perishable food items and cases of
bottled water were thrown away. Cries of “please not the food, we need to eat” fell on
unconcerned ears."
