  1. What the blazes is going on in our #EducationSystem ? Is this another example of #Managerialism going wrong?

“Dr McNeill was appointed CEO in June 2025, but while applying for the role, did not tell the CIT board she was under investigation by TAFE NSW for "serious misconduct".

The controversy sparked the public inquiry, which led to an assembly committee making seven recommendations and 11 findings, including that Dr McNeill should have disclosed the information about the misconduct investigation to the CIT board in a timely manner.

Dr McNeill told the committee that she had sought to disclose the investigation to CIT during the recruitment process but had been advised on multiple occasions, both verbally and in writing, by TAFE NSW that she was not permitted to do so. “

    1. The obvious. Cost.
In Australia post secondary, non-unversity education (vocational but not only) was done by an institution called #TAFE the cost was minimal. Then neo-libs came to power and suddenly everything was for profit. Where subjects were $25 per semester they were now $500. Nice if your work pays for it, but if you're changing professions or under-employed, your screwed.

    2. Remote course delivery. Outside of few legitimate cases, video course delivery is shit, absolute crap.
If you're neuro-spicy, you have to be fully, 100% focused on the screen, which is extremely exhausting. Plus, it kills socialisation.
I spend as much time making friends in college as I did studying.

    3. Unpopular opinion.
Once you get older, cognitive decline is a thing.
AI helps me do shit I could only do in my youth.
Yet many folks look at AI as if it's Satan incarnate.
For older folks, AI is a cognitive wheelchair.

  14. Hearing of troubles in #WesternAustralia's trades #Appenticeship scheme.

Seems #WA #TAFE has failed to deliver the required technical training content for a 3 year apprenticeship within the 3 year timeframe.

And has not notified the #ApprenticeshipBoard of this failing.

Only notified the apprentices after the board had told the apprentices that they'd completed theur apprenticeships.

And tried BS "failed to attend".

    #Maladministration?

3 years of low pay for the apprentices.
    Another?

  15. RE: Albo’s proposed YouTube ban.

I've studied & taught students from foundation to #Tafe to post-graduate. In diverse places, from homeschooling to Go8 universities. Not a single one has not involved at least one YouTube video.

Could it possibly be just another distraction to take focus off their irresponsible refusal to act on the results and recommendations of yet another senate inquiry?

  21. Applying for #university vs #Tafe

The latter refuses your application and insists you do AQF level 3 first despite already completing AQF level 10 plus 20 plus years of practical experience.

    What is education hierarchy?

  22. It must be difficult to find a #University with a poorer curriculum for a #ComputerScience degree than #ECU in #Perth, #Australia. No wonder ECU is locally considered a glorified #TAFE (vocational school). I am sure there are Coding #Bootcamps that are more challenging than this programme! 🤦

  23. Asking a big question, I would super appreciate any comments and super appreciate boosts etc.

For people who majored illustration in Australia. What university/TAFE did you go to? Would you choose the same knowing what you know now? What did you like and dislike about it?

    My main thoughts are:
    1. Uni of Newcastle
    2. Flinder Uni/CDW studio
    3. Melbourne Polytechnic

  24. Many have noticed how #TAFE in Australia has been fucked up by consecutive neoliberal BS ideologies that include privatisation. So now we see a Vocational Education & Training sector eviscerated & dodgy private colleges offering point & click BS courses.

I worked in #TAFE for over 25 years in various capacities. I left in 2010 because I was getting embittered by teacher colleagues who couldn't see what was happening & didn't do anything to stop it.

Anyway, here's something I wrote about the whole thing on my blog. Please boost if you find it interesting.

  29. CW: Life update - new job leading charity

In early December I am really excited to be starting a new role as Executive Officer of the Carlton Neighbourhood Learning Centre.

CNLC is a community house and registered as a large #charity with revenue in excess of $1 million, with 25 staff and 60+ volunteers. CNLC delivers #CommunityDevelopment and #environmental programs, and a range of adult education courses. Its primary focus is working with people who experience disadvantage, in particular new #migrants and #refugees and people with #disability.

While I’m looking forward to returning to leading a charity and a #grassroots community organisation, I’m sad to leaving my role as Campaigns Officer at the Australian Education Union Federal Office after five years. The work of the #AEU is incredibly important - shaping the future of millions of Australian children and young people (and also adults in the case of #TAFE) over generations. #PublicEducation provides hope and opportunity that many might otherwise not have. Public education was incredibly important in shaping my life and I will remain a lifelong advocate for the work of the AEU and our sister unions globally.

PS: Charities don’t have much spare money, so I’ll be calling on people I know for favours. Thanks in advance 🙂!
