Let’s face it, we know next to nothing about #AUKUS Tier One, and the little we know we garner from US and UK sources where the *paranoia* surrounding secret and top secret briefings isn’t as ingrained as it is at home — there are historical precedents behind this behaviour which can be teased out of the history of the UKUSA agreement). Hence much of what is written domestically in the press and open to the public about AUKUS is little better than hypothetical commentary (neither confirmed nor denied by govt or #RichardMarlesMP). Some commentary is a little better in that the guesses postulated therein have a grain of *probabilty* based on *educated guesses*. But they are few and sparse in details. That is the state of play where AUKUS is concerned and very unlikey to change in the future.Moreover, where more knowledgeable sources are commenting, they do so with an agenda, but their comments reflects their limited knowledge beyond broad issues, or are unable to be more specific due to the Official Secrets Act. Either way, what is available to the public, journalist and politically active commentators is next to nothing in the face of the most complex Defence procurement in the history of the ADF.
Dear Eddy, I’ve written the above to keep my comment short by not addressing all of your talking points that I take issue with. Tbf, my 23 years in Defence does not make me an expert, but it ought to count for something in the public arena. Given my views above, I sympathise with commentators and journalists who feel obliged, and rightly so, to keep the AUKUS issue alive hoping for transparency and accountability by maintaining the *heat* in this public debate. It’s a healthy thing.

Assuming Pine Gap is interested in satellites, not in faint astronomical sources, the large (approx 30m) diameter dishes in this image have, I think, only two possible purposes:
1. they are listening for side-lobe whispers from satellite-to-satellite, or from satellite-to-ground.
2. the contain offensive (tightly directed megawatt radio frequency energy) transmitters.I am not a physicist, but I think 1. is unlikely, because satellites are small, they are 5m across rather than 30m, and their side-lobes are probably quite loud. It is difficult to fit a high-gain, very directional antenna inside a fairing on a rocket. Listening to them requires good low noise amplifiers and fine tuning, not large dishes. You'd be better off spending vast money on amplifiers and decryption. Contrary to the evidence in this image, you very much want to hide the size of the spy dishes if you can, to make them not noticable, increasing the chances of listening-in undetected for the later, messier stages of armageddon.
As a satellite maker, if you wanted to avoid listening, you'd build your satellites to use extremely high (light-like) frequencies to transmit data. Mirrors and lenses rather than dishes. Small and tight. I presume that all military satellites use laser data transmission.
What we see are: many, large dishes - an obvious target that will certainly be destroyed minutes into a world war.
Because of these dishes size, and mass, turning them would be rather slow - seconds rather than the nanoseconds a phased array can manage. So these are gently retargettable units, designed to dwell for seconds or minutes on target satellites.
Which means that their usefulness is either; in peacetime, or within a few minutes of war starting. My money is on 2. Pine Gap is antisat weapons.
Would be nice if we were told, but we will not be told because our contribution is, quite literally - dirt.

Just look at Gough Whitlam in the '70s; the moment he started questioning the "status quo" and those bases, he was absolutely shafted. It’s hard to have a sovereign foreign policy when the landlord decides to evict the tenant for asking where the spare keys are.

They told you this on the ABC. They told you this on Sky. They were telling you nonsense. MIT Professor Ted Postol — the man who proved the Patriot missile failed in the Gulf War while presidents were claiming a 97 percent success rate — has now established that current intercept rates against Iranian missiles run at a few percent at most. The systems are depleting. The decoys are multiplying. The official story is, in his own carefully chosen word, a fraud. The first casualty of war is truth. But the deeper insight, the one Phillip Knightley identified fifty years ago, is that the lies are not random. They serve purposes. And right now, they are serving purposes that Australians have every right to examine. -

Just like the U.S., the Australian government has Palestinian blood on it's hands as it provides not only weapons but also intel and surveillance data to the I.D.F.
It hosts the Pine Gap military base on land stolen from the Arrernte people, and uses it against the will of the Arrente people to share surveillance data on Palestinians with the U.S. and Israel.
