I've lived in Australia for over 20 years, but haven't lost my British accent. When people hear me, a typical conversation starter is whether I have a favourite UK football team. I answer that I used to follow football in the 1980s but lost interest when big money began to pour into the game. I remember one of the last games I saw was with a friend in Bradford, sitting with a pint outside the pub watching two teams in a very low division of the Sunday league. The teams were close to fighting at times until some women pushing prams and dragging youngsters crossed the pitch as a short cut to where they were going. Both sides immediately stopped playing, fighting, arguing and just stood still until the families were off the pitch. Some opposing players were even having a laugh about it. Just like that, it broke the tension, and the game continued.
The Manchester City debacle that covers much news bandwidth is the absolute antithesis to the community spirited game that is played and watched by millions. Money, power, millionaires/billionaires spoil everything. 😡
