I expected the spider lily bulbs I planted to start blooming in mid-September or so, but one of the ten decided it's party time right now 🌷😎🌷 I really love these flowers.

I just realized that I didn't see much of the Japanese spider lily posts this year. It's a bit late in the season, but here's my version; "The Other Side" painted in 2022. It's titled so because in Japan, this flower symbolizes the ones (ancestors) that crossed over to the other side.

The autumn equinox coincides with the Buddhist observance of 'Shūki Higan-e' (秋季彼岸会), when offerings are made at family graves. Because of this the flower has, for many, come to symbolise the afterlife.
Higan (彼岸) translates as 'Other Shore', a reference to the far shore of the Sanzu River (三途の川 Sanzu-no-kawa/'River of the Three Crossings'). Similar to the River Styx in Greek Mythology, the dead would cross the river to reach the afterlife.

Crinum asiaticum, which is commonly known as #poisonbulb, #giantcrinumlily, or #spiderlily is a plant found in many warmer regions as an ornamental.
It is native to Indian Ocean islands, East Asia, tropical Asia, Australia and Pacific islands.
The conditions in #Melbourne #Australia are perfect for this plant, as can be seen here by it’s general health and condition.
Not so good for pet owners however, as all parts of the plant are poisonous (if eaten).
