Good news for a change; I won the first place and second place for the pastel division in Statewide Miniature Show.

Étude des nénuphars aux pastels à l'huile 🪷

Through many disappointments, I've grown to hate art competitions. Not knowing much about the inner makings, I felt many are not completely fair and impartial; I know it's "all subjective" but when I see the same pool of artists & pieces that are "good" but don't have any emotional impact always get awards, the pain of rejection is doubled. So I've decided that this is my final year of entering competitions. Of course as soon as I decide that, both of what entered get in... Irony. #PastelArtist

Any day I can be in the studio for an hour is a good day.

One of my early plein air paintings titled "July 13th" was just sold from North Tahoe Arts gallery in Tahoe City, California. This was particularly a memorable piece -- the location, Davis Creek State Park, was burned in a wild fire two years later, and these trees are now gone. Each painting holds a special memory for the artist. I hope the buyer will enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating it.

pastel on Wallis paper - 4.5x6.5 inhttps://www.dailypaintworks.com/fineart/tamami-tokutake/sunset-over-the-city/1227087
Went on a short evening hike, and watched the mountains turn bright orange in the setting sun. The city started to flicker in the sunset glow.

Despite this being a quick sketch, it may actually get entered to a miniature contest in October -- it's been very popular so far!
"The Star of the Farm"
pastel on homemade surface - 5x4.5 inhttps://www.dailypaintworks.com/fineart/tamami-tokutake/the-star-of-the-farm/1225581
Painted at Reno Food Systems Farm. He is definitely the star of the farm, or at least he thinks so. It was a much-needed relaxing day.

And this is what I painted today. A farm goose.

Not sure if I'm so organized to make a purchasing decision like that. I'd first fall in love with a piece -- I'd try not to, but sometimes that happens... It would come home with me, while my mind is going like "OMGOMG what have I done" then I'd make a room for it at home and madly admire the acquisition. 2/🧵 #PastelArtist

"Near Sunset "
pastel on Canson Touch paper (burgundy) - 14x14 inhttps://www.dailypaintworks.com/fineart/tamami-tokutake/near-sunset-/1224583
I don't hike in the evening often. So when I do, the beauty of the light fascinates me.

Pigment smearing also happened this afternoon. Just one hour. It's a therapy, it's a therapy.

"Summer on the Farm"
pastel on Canson Touch paper (indigo) - 14x7 inhttps://www.dailypaintworks.com/fineart/tamami-tokutake/summer-on-the-farm/1224057
Plein air at my favorite urban farm Reno Food Systems. The clouds were wild, and gave us good shade for much of the afternoon.
