99 million years ago, the #extinct #cicada species #Cretodorus #noonoo became trapped in a drop of tree resin, which preserved it as #amber #fossil in excellent condition. A notable feature is its extremely long, flexible #proboscis, distinct from the piercing #mouthparts of modern species. D. Fabrikant et al. (2026) suggest that this allowed the #insect to #flexibly probe crevices and cracks in search of food.
